Poll: Better batsmen-Alastair Cook vs AB de Villiers in tests?

RK_123

In limited overs formats, there is no comparison between the two. They are poles opposite to each other.

However in tests, Cook has been breaking some records and is expected to break a few more in future. So who do you think had a better test career or will end up as a better batsmen in tests when they retire?

Discuss and feel free to put your points..!

So is ABDV committed to test cricket? I always get mixed messages from him but probably because I have no idea what's going on in SA. Is he going to be playing this England Summer?

Would have been interesting what AB could have achieved in test had he not decided to be a drama-queen.. when playing well he gave the same vibe that you would expect from someone like Tendy/ Lara..

Never felt the same way about Cook even once (with all due respect)

ABdV's playing politics. There's no room in South Africa's side for him thanks to quotas but de Villiers will destroy South African cricket if he makes that public, hence his various excuses for not playing Tests.

Mmm, that seems questionable. The English are quite blinkered when it comes to quotas, if listening to TMS is anything to go by. Would like to hear from a South African on this topic.

Furball has basically hit the nail on the head. There's only space for five white players. At the moment that's one of Steyn/Morkel/Olivier , QDK, Elgar, Cook and Faf.

He can't replace one of the bowlers, he isn't gonna open or keep wicket and Faf is his best friend and Captain and I'm sure that has some bearing on his decision.

If the quotas aren't met then the sports minister will impose bans on hosting international events etc. He said he wants to "earn" his place back. It sounds admirable, but he is ABdV. What does he have to prove domestically?

Doubt this can be the reason. Nobody is going to question AB's place in the XI if he is committed fully to test format.

As for the replacement, he comes into the team at no.4 with Cook getting dropped and Bavuma to open. Faf at 5, JP at 6 and Qdk at 7.

Cook. Easily. Fast scoring middle order tonkers are a dime a dozen. Openers who can go big and grind out tough runs aren't. De Villiers is a ridiculous LO player but id have Cook over him any day in tests.

AB

Cook isnt a particularly good player of quality pace bowling (plus he can be easily contained) whereas AB has no real weaknesses

Bavuma isn't an opening bat, so that's stupid.

The reality is that there currently isn't room for de Villiers in the Test side.

De Villiers is infinitely the more talented of the two however Cook has handled his (test) career better. Alastair Cook is a stodgy accumulator who has realised his weaknesses and paired his style down accordingly to just the two-three shots that he plays well, the cut to anything wide, pull and leg-sided 'flick-off the pads' to anything wicket-to-wicket. He has made himself into a great batsman whereas AB is more naturally gifted. AB's format hopping has also meant he has occasionally wavered from test standard whereas you were never in any doubt that Cook was a test] batsman - even before he was axed from the one-day team in all honesty.
