It's not smart but have to admit it's gotten him a lot of runs too.

Great if it comes off but there will be times when it's just not the right thing to do (like a while earlier) and if he can't reign himself in those situations it's inevitably going to hurt his team.

Well precisely, it's situational. There's many circumstances where he can get away with playing like that, but coming in with 3 overs left in the day is not one of them. Highest risk for no reward at all.
