Amiss hadn’t played a Test since the previous summer and, upon his recall, had a reputation against fast bowling to restore.
“The double-hundred was so, so special,” he told AOC. “People were talking about me not being able to play fast bowling so to come back against four of the best West Indian cricketers of all time, especially Roberts and Holding, was very special indeed.”
He was the only Englishman to pass 50 in the innings as they were all out for 435. England still lost heavily, but not before Amiss became one of only two batsmen to score a double-century against West Indies between 1976 and 1988.
Is that the Henriques game?Damn was going to mention Shane Bond's WC game too.
Shaun Tait in the Australian OD competition final as a young bloke was pretty handy.
Yeah fair enough, I watched it live and whilst you thought we had a chance once it got under 100 (with a recognised batsman we shall not name at the other end on one leg) it was still a 100-run win. Plus Astle dropped Thorpe on 4 and he went on to score a double ton of his own, so it was really clawing his way back to square in the match context. The margin says 100 runs but when that match was happening, it looked like Astle will win the game for the team if he played 10 more overs. Crazy knock and certainly deserves to be consired as it brought the team from a no hope situation to a winning hope situation as you have put it up in the post.
There was an absolutely fantastic oral history written about this (and Tait in general, I think) that I just can't find anywhere.Shaun Tait in the Australian OD competition final as a young bloke was pretty handy.
there is really good TCM piece done by kimber on this iircDamn, I swear there used to be a video on youtube from Robelinda about it.

taking a single with 13 to win off the first ball of a darren gough over then watching both macgill and mcgrath get simultaneously yorked must have stung a bit though.Steve Waugh 122* & 30* plus 2/8 against England 1998/99.
Still ****s me how 281 in 43 became 298 in 43. So harsh on SA, especially considering how sides were regularly doubling up on their 35 over score throughout the tournament.1st Semi-Final: New Zealand v South Africa at Auckland, Mar 24, 2015 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo
David Miller's 18 ball 49 & AbdV's 65.
Strange as it may sound but best performance in losing cause in this particular match would be Imran Tahir's imo. Yes, he did not pick any wicket but the kind of impact he had on the game when he came on to bowl was something else.1st Semi-Final: New Zealand v South Africa at Auckland, Mar 24, 2015 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo
