John Wright may leave India

This could just be another media beat-up.

But if it is true that the Indian board don't want to renew John's contract, that would be highly disappointing.
John's done wonderful things for India, particularly in transforming their attitude to matches away from home.

Of course if John doesn't want to renew the contract himself (and wants to spend more time with his family), that's understandable.

Still what do you guys make of this ? And if John were to leave, who do you think should be his replacement ?

Personally, the only Indian coach that I think would be good enough to take over the national post is Roger Binny.
Roger has done several advanced coaching courses in Australia and has had success with the India u-19 and A teams.
He coached the u-19 team to World Cup Victory in 2000.
If not him, it would have to be a foreign coach like Chappell, Jones or DeVilliers.
DeVilliers would be an interesting choice.....India has long considered the appointment of a specialised bowling coach but nothing has come of it.

Oh no, I hope not.

The Times of India isn't renowned for its 'journalistic' integrity. So im hoping its just a false media stunt.

John has been so instrumental in this Indian team's transformation. He has done wonders with his work ethic, organisation and commitment to Indian Cricket's cause.

I for one, hope he stays on until after the 2007 World Cup. The last thing Indian Cricket needs right now is losing John Wright.

If sadly he does go, I think Dean Jones was really, really interested in coaching India. Dean Jones said lately in an interview that he'd love coaching India.

Dean would be a good move, as would Greg Chapple. But for me, John Wright needs to stay.

Yeah I'm with u here Sangrah. I was hoping John would stay with India till 2007.

I hope these reports are not true.

I've heard rumours that John Wright is keen to return to NZ & help out at the Academy in some way.

Maybe a future New Zealand coach if he returns back to New Zealand or became one of John Bracewell's right hand men?

He's done such a great job with the Indian team, he should be there to reep the awards in a year or two years time when they really start to blossom. I hope this is just another pile of garbage :(

They lost Adrian Le Roux, who had done so well in keeping the Indian team fit- that was followed by a spate of injuries and pathetic performances, especially of key fast bowler Zaheer. There was an attempt to hire Akram, but that never took off. Bruce Reid's contract was not renewed, which resulted in a few bowling problems, especially for Zaheer, who got 5/95 in Brisbane when Reid was coach. I hope these clowns in Kolkata don't mess things up this time.

Anyway, New Zealand cricket authorities have been quoted saying they want Wright back, but whether Wright will take up that job right now, I can't say.

If not Wright (who should not leave, yet), the coach should either be a bowler or an opening batsman or a great player, or someone with aggressive plans (like John Buchanan). Someone who has succeeded as a batsman or bowler everywhere. He should be flexible, not rigid, Bishen Bedi-style.

Times of India? Ask me, I'm a regular reader of TOI. That 'magazine/glossy' should forfeit its right to be called a newspaper. They're just trying ways and means of getting more readers, which brings third page nonsense on the front page. Not to mention a more or less hysterical coverage of the India/Pakistan series. Who can forget the 'TOI is number one' articles? They're regular!

I hope this is just another pile of garbage
Knowing them, it may be. That 'match-fixing' theory fell flat. So will this one. Have editors forgotten how to edit newspapers?

the reason given by the board for this reported change is that the players have sapped Wright of all his knowledge, and he has no more to offer.....the players want new ideas....

Learn to bat against Umar Gul?

(sorry, below the belt).

Clearly, that would be nonsense. Coaches do not just stand still, neither do they get sucked dry of ideas.

or at Perth for that matter.......:)

I agree with you regarding the point about coaches being able to come up with ideas al the time....

But then the highest paying job in world cricket now ( excepting the players) is that of the Indian team coach....perhaps the BCCI is trying to cut corners by hiring a less expensive coach?
