Glenn Maxwell - polarising figure

91Jmay

International Coach
Not at all, just the facts. If he played "properly" he'd probably average 50 with a strike-rate of 100 but he's too stupid and he gets out virtually every single innings playing a stupid big shot because he's bored and stupid.

Basically the opposite of what you said.
This is laughable

The Battlers Prince

International Vice-Captain
It is just the State of things. If he can ever make it to NSW he will be selected in all three formats and become captain and everyone will love him.
No, he'd be more a Keith Miller story where he's the obvious choice as skip at some point but gets overlooked for some little punce like Lyon

Compton

International Debutant
He's obviously very talented. I've always had the gut instinct that he'll be one of those players that just kicks on with an extended run in the test side.

Haha exactly, Maxwell is a ****ing awesome batsman.

I fear he'll go down as the biggest waste of talent of his generation.

The reason he's not averaging 50 is not just because he's stupid, he's also not good enough to consistently pull off the shots he plays. Plenty of batsman with his level of intelligence average higher

That's exactly the same thing

Almost no one's good enough to consistently pull off the shots he plays. The reason he tries is because he's stupid.

He's stupid for trying to be too smart. He overdoes the whole plonk the ball to the empty part of the field thing.

It was working in the WC but he's been disappointing after that.

Incorrect.

Guys like de Villiers average more because he has a better defence and a better understanding of when to play his shots and when to play more conventionally.

Yeah it's called game sense.

Maddison, as an example, has more game than Renshaw, but Renshaw knows how to score runs, which is the only skill which matters.

Bahseph

State Captain
Maxwell is unbelievable in terms of his range of shots and hand-eye co-ordination. If he tightens up his defence he could legitimately be one of the most destructive batsman in the world. Whether he can tighten up his defence though, is up for debate.

Can someone clarify why he hasn't been given more of a chance in Tests? Yeah he looks crazy in LO cricket but he doesn't have a terrible FC record.

It's also knowing what works for you and putting away what doesn't. As you've said yourself, Border scored 10,000 runs on 3 shots, Waugh worked out that he was getting himself out against the short ball so put away his pull and hook shots.

Yea I'm starting to come around to the idea that the two biggest skills in batting are game sense/understanding where you can score runs/whatever you want to call it + mental concentration to not throw away a start.

All the technique and talent stuff is a distant third.

He's 28 now and further away from the test team than ever as far as I can see. Late-comers like Hayden etc. all broke into the test team at around the age he is now. Time is running out. He ultimately only has himself to blame for not being more consistent in FC cricket and putting down the big runs. Having said that he doesn't get much of a chance when ODI scheduling etc. doesn't allow him to play much FC cricket, which is frustrating.

It's not uncommon for people to work this out when they get older, which is why late-20s/ early-30s are usually the best years for batsmen. Guys who look to have that together young (Cook a good example, Renshaw potentially another) often don't look as good as their contemporaries but just eek out more runs because of those attributes. It's such an important skill.

How can you just be starting to come around to the idea now? That's like saying I've just realised that cricket bats are made of wood
