Their stats are pretty comparable, except that Moeen gets bowled a lot more and picks up more wickets. But then Duminy doesn't get much of a chance since SA have a pace-heavy attack. I've always thought he is a very useful bowler.

Can't say I've seen enough of Duminy's Test career to properly judge, but if forced to pick I'd go Moeen because he's closer to being an all rounder. I guess it would largely depend on balance though.

Don’t think the bowling is now comparable. Duminy is a very part-time spinner nowadays and wouldn’t be capable of bowling 30+ overs in a test series let alone an innings. When JP was last in India on wickets which were considerably more favorable to spinners than Ali had to contend with, Dean Elgar sent down nearly five times the amount of overs than JP.

It's weird because I'm fairly sure he's been picked in the past because of that extra option he offers, but SA just rarely ever seem to use it. Probably says more about the quality of their bowling options than it does about JP's tbf.

I think that was just wanting a spinner to take the ball away from the righties, because Piedt and Harmer were already in the side for that tour.
