Team of the Year 2016

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
I like the side Fox picked. Only change will be I will get in another fast bowler ahead of Stokes.. Maybe Wagner as he seems to be the ideal 3rd seamer. 1 all rounder should be more than enough and with the 2 spinners there, you are covered for all conditions.

I'll go:

Cook
Azhar
Smith
Kohli
Bairstow
Stokes
de Kock
Ashwin
Starc
Herath / Wagner (condition dependent)
Rabada

Wagner does feel strange putting in there but his stats have been very good, and against a wider variety of opposition than the Poms (who are probably next in line) IMO. Not sure on Smith at 3 because of how little he actually batted there at Test cricket this year, but he did score a century there when he did, and I think he has a better case for selection than Pujara or Root. Didn't include Brathwaite because his record outside of that Test against Pakistan is pretty slim, I think Cook and Azhar have been more consistent. Not been a great year for openers.

ODI:

Warner
Hales
Root
Kohli
Stokes
Buttler
M Marsh
Hastings
Starc
Bumrah
Tahir

Had some difficulty balancing this. Tried to pick players in the role that they would usually play, which is tricky in ODI's.

T20:

Warner
Gayle
Kohli
de Villiers
Watson
Buttler
Russell
Bravo
Zampa
Bumrah
Mustafizur

Picking from all T20 matches, not just internationals, hence the Warner types making it. Again had issues with balance etc.

Toughie.

I'd probably go:

Cook
?????
Smith
Kohli
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Ashwin
Starc
Rabada
Anderson

There's probably a couple of glaring omissions there. Root doesn't feel particularly right but other than Kohli and Bairstow I can't really think of any batsmen that have had amazing years. You could maybe drop Stokes for a specialist bat but he's had an amazing year with bat and ball.

Anderson/Starc over Herath probably the most contentious call but minnow bashing Zimbabwe and Australia isn't that impressive IMO
5 Englishmen, way more than any other side. You really are precious aren't you

I mean you could at least pretend to be impartial

All deserve it TBH. Cook over Braithwaite/Azhar is nothing, no opener really had a great year and Cook was solid enough.
Root Stokes and Bairstow were all immense, and Anderson statistically deserves to be there.

Lots of 50/50 calls there, quite obviously biased, especially Cook.

Rahane just edging out Root, had a slightly better year.

Jeez England have played 17 tests this year. Thats a lot.
They've always played comfortably the most tests, but yes that's high even by their standards.

Hence why Cook's managed 140 Tests since debuting in 2006, yet Ross Taylor who debuted a few months afterwards has managed 78.

Harsh on Yadav and Neville tbh. Put Wade in there for Neville.

Umesh had like 10 catches dropped off him. Lots of pacers bowled worse this year.

S Marsh
A Ali
S Smith
V Kohli (K)
B Stokes
R Ashwin

Good depth in batting, bowlers covering almost all varieties to handle just about any kind of pitch, an amazing Kaptain :p An awesome side I think :)

Pleased to see Wagner making it, thoroughly deserved, & had better figures than Anderson.
