I have been contemplating a best all time test XI...which one do you think is better?

Team 1: Hayden, Gavaskar, Richards, Lara, Border, Sobers, Gilchrist, Botham, Khan, Warne, Steyn
Team 2: Hayden, Gavaskar, Richards, Lara, Border, Gilchrist, Botham, Khan, Warne, Steyn, Muralitharan

In any and all conditions, countries, tracks, etc.

It is not as well you lose too much spin considering Sobers could (left hand) spin the ball both ways.

Really don't need so many bowlers when you have a world class all rounder. Sobers strengthens any side he's in.

Good to see Border in both sides. I presume he's skipper and first choice left arm spinner.

The West Indies side of the mid 70's to mid 80's would beat either of those two teams, Viv Richards of course playing for the Windies ?

Team 2 and it's not so close considering we're talking all conditions. Khan, Steyn, Botham AND the two greatest spinners of all time? You can't go wrong with that. Add in some part time work from Richards and you have plenty of bowling options.

The runs that Sobers gives would dramatically outweigh the wickets Murali would take, given the other bowlers in the attack (even if we're talking about fat Botham).

Not Terrible
Well it depends on conditions, Murali + Warne on day 5 on a turning wicket? Ridiculous. Even Bradman couldn't score runs in that scenario.

Thing is, you only ever need 20 wickets. There's heaps of spin in the team without Murali - Warne, Sobers and Border. That's enough. If this side can't take 20 wickets, adding another bowler isn't going to help.
