Rashid better than Warne: official

He has been a revelation to be fair to him. Bowled well enough to deserve a chance in tests outside Asia in the future. Up to him to do well enough to keep his place once that happens.

I do think that we should be thinking of employing Saqlain Mushtaq on a more permanent basis though as it sounds like he has done a lot of work with Rashid in giving him the self belief to go and perform as he has so would be worth seeing what he can do with other spinners across the country.

Also shows how letting a wrist spinner settle in to a side matters. Fortunate for him that Ali was in the side the whole time, if he had have been the sole spinner he probably would have been put on the scrap heap for some of his bad spells already.

He still has too high an economy to truly work at international level IMO, simply can't build pressure with him playing.

Been really good. In this game, he bowled quite a lot of bad balls which were put away most of the time (Pujara apart) but he also bowls a brilliant delivery every now and again, the googly to Rahane being the highlight.

Given that wrist spinners tend to (or at least should) be used in a more attacking manner than finger spinners, a higher economy rate perhaps shouldn't be used too liberally as a stick with which to beat him; having a rank amateur and a batsman that bowls as your spin partners probably doesn't help either. I would have liked to have seen current Rashid with, say, 2011/12 Swann

I definitely think he's earning a go in England.

1. Cook
2. Hameed
3. Root
4. Moeen
5. Bairstow
6. Stokes
7. ?????
8. Woakes
9. Rashid
10. Broad
11. Anderson

Could work very nicely. Moeen or Bairstow could move down to 7 if a middle order batsman emerges, and you've got 6 legitimate bowling options, which should take a lot of the workload off Anderson and Broad and which could help extend their careers, particularly Anderson's.

See how he goes for the rest of the series but I'm kind of cool with the idea of Buttler continuing as a specialist #7

I can see the argument for not unsettling Bairstow but still think Jos is the better keeper.

Plus Bluey seems the better test bat currently, so long term I'd be happier with him as the specialist batsman.

Couldn't agree more and I've definitely been one of his biggest critics.

If Moeen can demonstrate enough batting ability to command a spot at 3, 4 or 5 then is there a case for playing both of them and the 4 seamers?

Yes. Moeen can do the hard yards in first innings and once the pitch starts to help the spinners later in a game Rashid comes right into it. Also shown he can do a job on pitches that aren't doing much on this tour too.

Rashid definitely worth a go at home. Ideally we find a new 4 and then Bairstow, Stokes and Moeen but if Buttler does well in the next two then maybe he can take the gloves and Bairstow bat 4.

Definitely. I don't even think Rashid and Moeen need to be bowling massive amounts of overs in that scenario - the bulk of the bowling should be done by the 4 seamers, but then you've also got a pretty handy leggie and offie up your sleeve if you need one.

Whatever it takes!!!
Yeah.. not totally buying Moeen as an international quality batsman for tests. He needs to be an all-rounder at best to make the side. It is surely an issue that you guys have way too many batsmen who can bat 6 and too few guys who can bat 4 or 5. I would stay stick Stokes upto 4 and use him like how RSA used Kallis. Think Cook anyways only uses him as a partnership breaker or the guy he turns to when all his other plans fail. Just increase Moeen's bowling workload, reduce Stokes' and get Stokes upto 4 where, if I am not wrong, he bats in FC.

Cook
Hameed
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Moeen
Woakes
Rashid
Broad
Anderson
Ball

A bit light on the batting front but for tests in England, this side SHOULD get the job done. Maybe Butler at 7 instead and drop Ball?

Too much fast bowling there.

Broad
Anderson
Woakes
Rashid

As your "four bowlers" and then Ali and Stokes. South Africa rarely had four quicks plus Kallis, unless they dropped their spinner.
