Always loved McMillan the test player and he was a better test player in my view but overall it has to be Klusener. To be fair Klusener would be close to an all time ODI side and McMillan wouldn't. Bet they would have been fun in T20's.

Test matches - McMillan

ODIs - Klusener by a long way

Difficult to really split them to be honest. McMillan was a proper allrounder, probably the best in the world in the mid 90s. Klusener started off as a tear-away quick who could bat a bit, but as injuries decimated him his batting became more and more prominent and was probably the best valuable ODI player for a couple of years.

I think McMillan was probably the better allrounder, since he contributed with both bat and ball in the same team, and was probably the best slipper SA has had post-isolation. When Klusener's batting really came to the fore, he was reduced to bowling cutters of a short run.

I think overall Klusener probably edges it but to be honest if both were available you'd play them both in the same team.

This one is tough. My heart wants to say Klusener because he was exciting but most teams would have killed to have big Mac in the 90s. Big Mac takes this, only just...

Big Mac if we are talking overall if its just odi/t20 then zulu.
No chance, big Mac didn't make the impact in any form to be anywhere near the levels Klusener achieved in ODIs if you're weighting the forms evenly.

Heck, Kluenser's a genuine contender for an all-time ODI XI... McMillan wouldn't even get close to making a SA XI in any format since their readmission.

Oh I know. MacMillan was better in tests, but Klusener is a massively underappreciated all rounder in ODIs. In the conversation for best ODI AR ever imo.

Can't choose because both were excellent in differing formats and weren''t dire in the other.

When you consider Big Mac brought 3 disciplines to the test team that never let you down and was the best all-rounder in the world safely for quite a period in the 90s then its difficult to go against him especially he only got his test debut at 29 due to isolation. I loved watching him bowl most though with that smooth amble for a big guy and go-duff at the crease. Him and Wessels at slip were pretty formidable for 1st and 2nd slip. Cullinan then replaced Wessels I think but I reckon McMillan/Wessels could probably push & even better Smith/Kallis for 1st/2nd slip combo since re-admission.

But what a pleasure it was to watch Zulu for those years. I reckon ODI cricket was at it's best in that period. The most competitive in that mid to late 90s. He could win games single handedly with both bat and ball. I genuinely remember his initial years and the red-head who used to charge in and bowl fast and how that changed over time. That test hundred in quick time at Newlands v India really just stamped his mark with the bat and it became more and more important from then and oddly I think he batted with Big Mac and they both got hundreds.

My God, Dodda Ganesh was complete fodder. They had Donald and Pollock and we had Dodda Ganesh.

How about this side:

Smith, Gibbs, Amla, Kallis, Cullinan, ABdV (wk), McMillan, Pollock, Harris, Steyn, Donald.

I give a much higher weight to test cricket and big Mac was a much better test player.

I do too. In fact I prefer to rate the forms separately, but the OP did ask across all forms so I felt obliged to weight them evenly.

What exactly does he add to that team in contrast to a specialist batsman. It would be a different matter if Kallis wasn't there but no team needs 6 bowlers, especially not when 5 of them are seamers.
