There will be different latitudes given to Smuts over somebody like say Philander. Rightly or wrongly, just they way it will be. Would not be surprised if each player has his own minimum rather than a team minimum to meet.

It might not be because of his all round ability (although that obviously helps his selection chances). Maybe they've spotted something about him and decided to bring him into the mix sooner or later. After all, they did that with Steyn and Rabada and that's paid dividends. Although it didn't work with Parnell, so they do need to manage Jansen carefully.

It is a tough one as we don't know.
I've always seen JJ make a good effort in the field and he has good hands domestically despite being chubby. But he is no Smith/Kallis.
Take Tahir. Not the greatest athlete but made an effort and clear number one limited overs spinner.
Shamsi. Not kicked on as a bowler even if never got a run in the side and always shown up in the field. Big period coming up for him. Not sure if we can carry spinners who can't bat and can't field unless they are really really good.
Someone like Vern seems to always pick up niggling injuries. Is that diet or condition ? He always makes an effort though in the field.
Lots of things to "weigh" up.
