I went for Ravi Shastri..I did not allow his post retirement antics to cloud my judgement..Purely on cricketing skills Shastri edges Dan Vettori slightly ahead..
Batting : Not that both had great batting talent but both were more known for being mentally tough.. Shastri though has played far more great innings in tough conditions than Dan Vettori..For example 107 in Barbados against Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh and Ian Bishop was supposed to be on a tough pitch..One of the great innings..
Bowling : Shastri was a left arm spinner of great ability which was completely under utilized once he started batting up the order..he had a beautiful action for a left arm spinner..
and finally
Captaincy : Shastri was supposed to have been a shrewd operator and tactically sound but unfortunately never given the full reigns..Great Captain India never had..

Lol @ even putting Ashwin and Stokes in the same sentence.

Stokes is already one of the classiest genuine all-rounders of his generation and has performed with bat and ball in varying conditions and he's young, and will likely improve more.

Ashwin is past 30, and his memorable achievements consist solely of bowling on dustbowls and occasionally scoring runs against terrible opposition.

You compare him to another limitedly talented, scrappy middle order batsman who lead his struggling nation with great dignity, if not a lot of grace.

Habibul Bashar vs Allan Border.
Habibul Bashar was his country's first ever test half centurion, first ever test centurion on foreign soil, first ever test centurion in Pakistan, first ever test centurion in West Indies and most importantly the first ever to be called a "BASHER" by Michael Slater because he could bash the ball. Which of these feats can ALBR claim for himself?
