Overrated/Underrated

this isn't the same as that mr_mister thread where it's exclusive to naming cricketers... it's everything and anything

overrated:
-pace bowling
-playing in the v
-the slope at lord's
-batsmen playing and missing outside the off stump
-gully

underrated:
-spin bowling
-reverse sweeps
-two midwickets
-carlos brathwaite

I do think reverse sweeps are underrated and I've said on numerous occasions that the shot would be a valuable addition to the arsenal of some batsmen - notably Ross Taylor.

Fitness is underrated. A lot of the runs of "form" for both batsmen and bowlers coincides with when they are at their fittest.

Underrated -
Having 2 or 3 all-rounders in your Test side
Not just thrusting your bat down the line when you want to leave a delivery

Overrated
Being a bat-up plebeian.
Reverse-swing

they allow for easy runs through point and third man if you can control them

and re your second point mitchell johnson is an amazing example of that, especially if you've seen his semi doco bouncing back

Underrated: Test bowlers economy rates

Overrated: Defaulting to sticking more slips in mindlessly to show 'intent'

overrated: batting positions

"x averages 50 @ 5 and only 27 @ 6 he is playing out of position this innings what a disaster!"

Overrated: Playing for drinks/end of session/close of play. Have always thought the final session should be where batsman cash in against tired bowlers/fielders but you often see the sides shut up shot in the last hour. Nightwatchmen would go under this as well I guess.

And yes, this post is kind of badly timed given Azhar Ali getting out last ball on the 2nd day arguably lost Pakistan the test.

You'd be surprised. Because Logie burned Australia a couple of times after we'd run through the top order, people talk about those sides as if they had amazing 1-11 line ups. They were great sides but their middle order pretty much post-Richardson's debut and the departure of the likes of Rowe and Kallicharan was pretty meh. Mind you, it rarely made a difference.

Some good ones there like Alan Davidson, Chris Cairns & Heath Streak being underrated and Tendulkar being overrated. But do many really underrate Sobers on here? News to me, guy seems rightly to be held in god-like status from what I've seen. And Ian Botham, how's he overrated? The fact he declined from the late 80s onwards? Same with Gavaskar's batting, can't see how that's overrated assuming we're talking Test cricket.
