Australian Contracts

Well with the contracts being awarded soon I think the time is right to take a look at who might get one, who'll lose theirs to a newbie and what not.

First of all; the possible losers. Nobody is really safe with their contracts so I'll list people who might (notice I said MIGHT) lose out:
Ashley Noffke - I'm sure of it; he's gone.
Nathan Hauritz - Might be saved by some promising late season performances.
Brad Hogg - See Hauritz. Can't see him playing an awful lot though.
Andy Bichel - Dropped at the wrong time?
Jimmy Maher - Barely played. Is he wanted any longer?
Steve Waugh - No might about it :P
Martin Love - Recently, he's done what? Someone remind me.
Nathan Bracken - Might stay, might go. You could argue either way.

Effectively, that opens 3 specialist batsmen's spots. Although, seeing as Hogg and Bichel are both known for a bit of batting, who knows (and I know Noffke and Hauritz are no bunnies).

Well, I'm gonna lay this one straight on the table and say Marcus North is a dark horse for a contract. I think his timing couldn't be better to notch up some great performances. In complete contrast to Martin Love, who seems to have fallen out of favour and the longer that happens, the harder it is for him to springboard off a string of superlative performances. As in, he'll have been out too long and without any barrier breaking scores.

With the bowlers, there's just too many names that get thrown around without an awful lot of conviction. Tait, Rofe, Wright, whoever you can think of, but I'm sure if Tait or Rofe don't get given a contract then the other bowlers will hang on. Kasprowicz back in?

As I said, hard to predict who will come in and who will go with the contracts exactly, but it should be interesting, so I am waiting expectantly.

Hauritz will lose his contract. There are three other spinners above him, MacGill, Hogg, Warne. He will lose it.

In my mind, Cleary would be a good pick.:)

Hogg won't lose his contract. Not this year anyway - maybe in 2005/06.

Take into account that Katich, Kasprowicz and probably Mike Hussey will be added to the list because they're not on it at the moment.

Haddin and/or Seccombe may get contracts too.

Love and Bichel probably won't lose their contracts - not just yet. As tragic as it is, I think Bracken is in the same boat.

Does Watson have one? From memory he does. That's the most interesting one for mine.

:( :( :( I know. The selectors will stick with him.

Both Katich and Watson have contracts

But as I recall Katich was an add-on to the 25. Thus making his retention at someone's expense. Initially only 25 are awarded, but other players can get one throughout the year.

Like I said though fellas, they're all players who haven't done anything to guarantee that they'll keep their contract.

I forgot to mention Hussey as someone to get back a contract.

So that would make non contract-holding contenders:
Hussey
North
Katich (for being an add-on, damn certainty though)
I know I'm missing someone.

If Maher & Love lose their contracts it will be a joke.

Since Maher came back from the TVS cup he has score two ING cup centuries including an Australian domestic record 187. In the couple of Pura cup games he has played he has scored a century and a 90.

Love has scored a 300* a century in Perth a 94 against India for Australia A an ING cup century and a number of 50s.

Hauritz will lose his contract and Kaspa will be named.

My list:

1. Ponting
2. McGrath
3. Gilchrist
4. Hayden
5. Gilelspie
6. Martyn
7. Lehmann
8. Lee
9. Warne
10. Symonds
11. Katich
12. Clarke
13. Bevan
14. Langer
15. Harvey
16. Hogg
17. Kasprowicz
18. MacGill
19. Williams
20. Bracken
21. Bichel?
22. Love
23. Maher
24. Watson
25. Hussey?

Put ?s beside the ones that might struggle.

Already has one.
He may be on the contract list at BaggyGreen.com.au but his contract was taken away after he was suspended, so technically he does not have a contract. So he will have to play three games before he is put on his full wage.

i dont think bichel will get one, or Maher for that matter, i think seccombe will get one and im hoping Inness, though i think Tait is almost a certainty. Bracken is also highly likley to retain his contract but i can only see him playing in ODI's. Hogg should also keep his

Agreed on Bic and Mabo, not on Seccombe and Inness.

Australia hasn't really made a habit of contracting a second keeper. I don't see what Seccombe has done to turn the tide.

Hogg should go, Bracken could go either way, I don't care.

Also, I think Dave Hussey is as much a chance as North, whom has really had a better season than him IMO. Come on, who's gonna stat me to death first?

No, no, no. I think you'll find none of them get a contract. Tait and Rofe not having a hope? Tait especially??!! Mate, get the bongwater out of your eyes and ears.

24. Haddin/Seccombe - I think they will have one of the 2 keepers on the contract list, but I'm buggered if I know which one.
25. Tait/Nicholson/Watson - line ball here, but judging on last year where they retained Watson despite his injury, he'd be the frontrunner.

Your never know - Murray Goodwin is my smokey. Elliott and Hodge would have a chance too.

The reason I don't like the idea of a second contracted keeper is that they simply won't play much. Hardly at all, even if Gilchrist is asking for a bit of rest time. The contracted players should actually have a reasonable chance of playing some games for Australia.

I don't see why a player should be given a $100,000+ contract if it is blatantly obvious they will hardly get a game.

They would have a chance of playing for Australia if Gilchrist was injured. We have back up bowlers & back up batsman on the list, why can't we have back up keepers? Hell...there's even back up all-rounders.

By your theory we should only contract about 18 players who will consistenly play for Australia.
