James Taylor retires

Horrible news, but glad they caught it before the worst happened. He was one of our best ODI batsmen and should have played a lot more for England in all formats. Showed some promise as a test player as well. Hope he transitions into life after cricket well.

Awful news. Right decision. Avery similar condition as what nearly killed Fabrice Muamba.

He was a fine player just about to kick on in tests.

We'll need new number 6, and have lost a world class silly mid off. I wonder if Bell comes in this summer.

Terrible news.

But it says in the first line that his career will come to an end, and then later on it says they hope he will come back after recovering from his operation. Not an expert on cardiac matters, can someone clarify whether it is fully treatable and whether it would be realistic to resume a top-level sports career after surgery?

Sheesh. Terrible news. I hope there is treatment which allows him a long and fulfilling life - albeit that his career has been cut so short.

Flip, that's terrible.

Was one of England's key players in the win in Durban at the end of last year.

Positive thinking - at least they've identified it early and he can receive decent treatment and ongoing monitoring. With his profile, hopefully the ECB and Notts will help smooth his transition into other work.

Poor bastard though. What a way for your career to end.

I think that`s more the Nottingham spokes person than Taylor or his doctors speaking about coming back. Not a doctor, but my understanding is heart conditions tend not to go away even after operations/treatment. So its unlikely that he will be back..

Sad, sad news for such a talented player.. must be devastating for him. Best wishes to him and family.

Well that sucks. As others have said though, this is far from the worst of all the possible eventualities. Wish him all the best for the future.

I'm assuming 'come back to Trent Bridge' means some kind of staff role with the club.

Completely gutted for him. So dedicated to his profession. Really was one of the hardest workers in the game and so driven by all accounts. Must leave such a hole in his life.

Really awful winter for young english professionals. Hobden dies, Fell cancer and now Taylor.

Awful news, least it was found though and we don't have a tragedy.

Hope the ECB help him in any way they can over the coming months.
