Was the surname of the first Cornishman to play for England actually pronounced as it was spelt? I note some other unfortunate surnames such as Bastard and Death are not.

It certainly was by John Arlott and Jim Laker, so I'm assuming everyone else did

There is also a story that runs along the lines of his staying in the same hotel as Alec Bedser and coming back late one evening to be greeted by the night porter enquiring 'Bed, Sir?'

To which he replied 'No, Crapp', and was hastily pointed towards the gents
