Being a world class batsman who can bowl is probably more effective than being a hit or miss batsman and hit or miss bowler.

Shakib is stiff not to get a mention at all in the thread so far, and I think he's probably the best Test allrounder in the purest sense of the word, but if told me I needed to pick someone to bat in the middle order and be the fifth bowler in a Test I'd definitely take Mathews.
