First Name on the Team Sheet

A thread where you think back as far as you can remember, decide who was the most important player your side had, who was being the guy you bank on to win you the game. Then decide when the mantle passed to someone else, and so on.

Williamson wasn't really the first name on the team sheet until 2015 right? McCullum had his doubles in 2014 and Taylor and Kane wasn't that awesome before that.

Yeah definitely.

You'd also probably say something more like

2006 - Shane Bond
2007-2011 - Daniel Vettori
2012-13/14 - Tim Southee
13/14-14/15 - Trent Boult
2015-present - Big Daddy Kane

As significant as players like McCullum and Taylor have been over this period, Vettori's allround presence was greater, and then our real Test momentum came when Southee and Boult began to blossom. I would say to their credit Taylor and McCullum have probably been in the top 3-4 names on the team sheet consistently for almost the last ten years, but in Tests they've never been the first on there.

I don't think I'd have had Southee as first name on the team sheet at any point.

On that fateful 2012 tour to SL, Southee actually stepped up and lead our attack with some excellent support in Boult. With a slightly undercooked Williamson, the drama and patches of poor form for Baz and Taylor, who else was there?

2012-2014 Southee took 94 wickets @ 24.71

There was probably a period where McCullum's utility as keeper/batsman made him our MVP.

Yeah I'm finding it hard to quite pinpoint it though. Vettori's value was so high that I can't quite place when McCullum felt more valuable.

Bond was a tricky one as well, 2003 and 2006 definitely but he hardly played any Tests outside of those years. #alwaysinjured

For India it was Sachin for the longest time, with Viru/Dravid/VVS having their moments during Sachin's injury and form slump.

Then it was MSD for a short while, and now I guess its Kohli.

For BD its been Shakib ever since he debuted basically.
