Imran Khan did it over about 6 years or something in the mid 80s, so I'm sure it's been done.

Yeah Imran had one series against India where over six Tests he averaged 61 with the bat and 13 with the ball.

In the 1978 series against Pakistan in England (3 Test series) Ian Botham averaged 70.66 with the bat and 16.07 with the ball. (Hell, I've just realised I've used statsguru)

well damn that kinda ****s on poor Bev, especially coz Imran's was over 6 tests. People on here always go on about how he never fired with the bat and the ball at the same time or some rubbish so I thought maybe Bev would be in the clear.

Still a remarkable stat considering how unimpressive the rest of his test career was

In the 1978 series against Pakistan in England (3 Test series) Ian Botham averaged 70.66 with the bat and 16.07 with the ball. (Hell, I've just realised I've used statsguru)

Botham got 212 @ 53 and 17 @ 18.29 earlier that year in NZ

Eta the series were consecutive so it would have been

428 @ 61 and 30 @ 17.3 over 6 tests

These are the only (Botham) series that meet the criteria.

I don't think anyone has ever said he never statistically fired with bat and ball at the same time. It's about how often he'd had the workload of a genuine all-rounder. In that series he batted at number 7 and never batted more than once in any of the 6 Tests and in one didn't bat at all. There's no getting away from it being a great performance.

yep, quite agree.

The pitches were generally so flat that the full team batting wasn't even required. 3 out of the 6 tests ended in draws.

Really had to bowl his heart out to capture 40 wickets on those freaking roads.

This same series contributed quite heavily to his stress fracture as well IIRC

and they keep on rolling in. suppose i jumped the gun a bit. he can't even claim some kind of 'in the past x years' type record since Kallis did it after him.

again, the reason i was compelled to make this thread is because I consider Bev a very unlikely owner of such an record, coz of the fact he's considered a part-time bowler and an ODI specialist.

If it was indeed a record, it'd make for a good channel 9 commentator trivia question in the upcoming series against the WI. Picturing Heals, Slats and Tubby talking about it now...

I remember this series quite distinctly actually, which is why I do rate Kallis highly. And the West Indies at that time still had a decent team. Both Amby and Walsh were still present (though obviously not at their best).

By 98/99 west Indies were a bit weaker. The two main bowlers were more advanced age wise by then, but still atg nevertheless. They had however, if I recall just come off of a great series win 3-1 versus a more favored England team.
