Both of those would be very bad ideas indeed.

    Both have reasonable technique.
Sreesanth said, "Next ball he was beaten and I said, 'is this the King Charles Lara? Who is this impostor, moving around nervously? I should have kept my mouth shut for the next ball - mind you, it was a length ball - Lara just pulled it over the church beyond the boundary! He is a true legend."

Yes, but both have been middle-order players all their careers.
Don't assume someone would make a reasonable opener just because he has a good technique. There are more important things.
Anyhow, Gibbs has been an opener all his life; the only way you could find an excuse for moving him down is if there was unquestionably someone else who could do the job as opener. No point making a middle-order player open just for the sake of getting an opener into the middle-order, where he might do better.

On the contrary, Jacques Rudolph has made a living opening the batting.

Liam did you look up every FC game Rudolph has played to see if he has opened?

Just a suggestion - holf off on it for a little while, because 1 Test isn't enough to judge with complete certainty. Maybe wait till after a few of the NZ Tests.

No, no, I should have said that it was the team from the last Test they played.

    My error.

No I knew that Rudolph opened, so I just searched up some examples.

These are presumably just examples of a trend, rather than anomalies?

Yes, a trend stating that he's quite an accomplished opener.

Remarkable that I never noticed that.
Wonder whether he thinks he's best in the middle or at the top.

Probably best at opening. But he's he in the middle because that is the only spot for him. He could be used as a makeshift opener or maybe they might see that as a future spot for him.

I'm satisfied with the response and i will go submit it as an feature article.

    Good luck!
If Rudolph really is an opener it's rather strange that they picked him in the middle-order for so long.
No surprise it hasn't worked very well, either, if so.

Thought I would get my shovel out and dig it up.

I would be interested in what somebody like Goughy would think of this.
