New Feature: Greg Matthews - Mo Better Impact

This is cool.

I love/d Mo. Seriously gutsy performer who would be very handy at #6 in the Aust team of now.

Yeah I love Mo too. Weird the way his test career panned out. Reckon he massively over-achieved with the bat but he was a much better bowler than what he showed at test level. Probably the best performed Sheffield Shield spinner in the last 50 years.

He was so dogged with the bat. Played most of his test innings as a #7 and averaged 45 there. As a bit of a weird statistical analysis Gilly averaged 47 at #7.

In terms of Australia's #7s who have played a decent amount of cricket in that spot, you've got Armstrong averaging 51, Gilchrist (47), Mo (45) and then Haddin (38).

Shame he didn't take say 3 wickets per test.

Yeah over achieved with the bat and was a better bowler than his test figures. The impact thing is interesting. Played some super innings and had a few really good matches with the ball, but strangely took 1 wicket or less in more than half his tests. His Shield record is pretty great for an offie in Australia, so it's a bit of a mystery that he wasn't able to match someone like Tim May's returns in tests when he was far superior at domestic level.

Hi FC batting average and his test batting average are pretty similar. I think that in tests he wasn't quite good enough as a batsman to hold his spot and his lack of wickets made it difficult to keep selecting him. His career ended when Australia's top order started to become really good and settled (Taylor, Boon, Martyn, Waughs, Slater) and Warne (and McGrath) began to emerge, meaning a bits and pieces player like him wasn't needed any more.

Great servant during one of Aust cricket's lowest ebbs though. And should always be remembered for how epic he was in the tied test in Chennai in 86.
