I don't think I've ever seen a specialist batsman in pro cricket who's as much of a shoveller as Nicholls. Graeme Smith was pretty exaggerated at various points of his career, and Dion Ebrahim was pretty bad, but Nicholls is in a league unto himself.

Nicholls looks alright to me. He's hardly the first leftie to favour the leg-side while look iffy against a left-armer swinging it away. Definitely LO potential there at least.

Didn't realise there were highlights packages on the blackcaps website. Good innings from De Boorder and Nicholls to dig NZA out of a hole. Feels like De Boorder's been around forever but he's only 29 - should be the reserve NZ keeper when Ronchi retires I assume.

SLA need 342 on the final day so it should be a good and competitive day.

Just looking at the Welligton club scene I thought Fraser Colson had retired, but seems he's unretired and moved to Easts. An unbeaten 56 in a two wicket win won't harm his prospects of a Firebirds callup. I was surprised he hadn't kicked on more after being in the 2008 Youth WC team.

Cricket folk are encouraged by his ability to play fast bowling and score quickly, football judges like his touch and ability to read a game. "I just look at which sport is going to give me the best opportunity. Two years ago it was soccer (Under 17 World Cup in South Korea) and last year it was cricket (Under 19 World Cup in Malaysia).

"I guess I've been more cricket focused over the last year and a half but I miss the soccer. It's still cricket at the moment but I'm not going to give away the soccer." Colson is potentially the next Jeff Wilson, a man he hopes to pick the brains of one day when the timing feels right to contact him.

"A few people have mentioned to me about having a chat, but I haven't yet."

Yeah Henry is lucky to be there IMO, hasn't taken enough wickets since he started playing ODIs.. Wags has the durability and experience needed for Aus.

Howsie favourite Nick Kelly named in the ND 12.

In other news, Will Young back at Lincoln for the second Sri Lanka A four-dayer; Munro sent back to Auckland. Milne rested from both CD and NZ A due to shin splints; Matt Quinn is in.

Ugh, I suppose it was too much to hope for that he'd be able to make it through an FC match without picking up an injury. Sad to say, but I think it's probably getting close to the time to accept that he'll only ever be an LO option.

it's shin splints. Not exactly a big deal. Just precautions that will carry on for the next 2-3 years IMO.

He's better than Cummins (high bar) and similar to Pattinson injury wise and the aussies trot out the sports science magic 25 age barrier when we poke fun at them so I'll trust in that for milne. Boult had a woeful injury record early on, so did Henry, Anderson still does and wheeler had one too. Plenty of hope left.

Getting shin splints from running around on a cricket field is not an easy thing to accomplish. I have had shin splints for the past ten years. I can't run really on concrete without it returning but can run all day long on a sports field. Once you get shin splints it takes specific exercises to recover (that I was always too lazy to do). It can take a while to put it behind you.

I seem to recall Jonathan Millmow had them after he was picked for the 1990 England tour.

More suited to limited overs cricket at the moment but he'll still do well enough in first class cricket for now. Will play for New Zealand down the track no doubt.
