McGrath flexed 12 degrees myth

Some people still believe that McGrath flexed his elbow 12 degrees after Murali made the claim in an interview. When confronted about where he got that information Murali blamed it on misrepresentation by the media.

No testing by the ICC or anyone else showed McGrath to be flexing his elbow by 12 degrees.

Earlier, Australian Cricketers' Association chief executive Tim May, who sat on the ICC committee that shaped the proposed regulations to change the rules on throwing, cast doubt on the accuracy of the figures produced by Murali about the degrees of extension employed by McGrath, Gillespie and Lee.
During an interview on Sport 927, the former Test wickets world-record holder claimed McGrath, Gillespie and Lee flexed their arms at 13, 12 and 14-15 degrees respectively. Although vague in explaining where he obtained those figures, Muralitharan was adamant he had been misrepresented

ICC study reveals that 99% of bowlers throw | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

According to Derek Pringle in the Daily Telegraph, Murali is no different from the vast majority of his fellow players. The current law states that there should be no straightening or partial straightening of the bowling arm during delivery, and in-depth research has revealed that even bowlers like Glenn McGrath and Shaun Pollock, usually considered examplars of the classical action, occasionally go over the prescribed tolerance limit, bending their arms by as much as 12 degrees.
Myth busted.

What a stupid thread.... I can see the thread starter ran away as soon as he was proved wrong.
Actually, it seems that the thread starter is correct....

A thorough biomechanical analysis of bowling actions around the world concluded that virtually all bowlers flexed their elbows to some extent. Even bowlers like Glenn McGrath and Shaun Pollock, perennial examples of bowlers with near-perfect bowling actions, were found to flex their elbows through about 8-10 degrees. Off-spinners are usual suspects, but even leg-spinners, for whom you would expect chucking to be physically impossible, were found to have illegal actions as per the original law.

Chucking ? a complex problem that still does not have a satisfactory answer - Latest Cricket News, Articles & Videos at CricketCountry.com

To the naked eye, McGrath's action looked classical and pure and no one questioned it. Amazingly, the Tests proved that McGrath bowled with an elbow extension of close to 10 degrees. What the scientists and bio-mechanists were saying was, if you can see there is an irregularity, then the bowler probably has an illegal action.

Some basic signs of bowlers with suspect actions with the naked eye:
1. If you can see the back of the bowler's hand at ball release.
2. If the bowler is right handed, his right leg will have a massive bend at delivery stride.
3. If the bowler is right handed, he will hardly use his left arm or side while delivering the ball.
4. Ask the bowler to stand straight up and place his bowling arm straight at 12-1 o'clock. Look at the distance between the top of his head and his hand. If that distance looks shorter when delivering the ball, then he probably has a suspect action.

ICC on right course by attacking chucking problem by degrees

At present (2004), spinners are permitted five degrees of bend, medium pacers 7.5 and fast bowlers 10. Muralitharan's doosra was initially measured at around 14 degrees.

CA defends bowlers over Murali 'chucking' claims - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Therefore, if we go by the 2004 Laws then it appears that Murali chucked but Glenn McGrath did not. Unless anyone is game enough to call McGrath a medium pacer.

And the origin of the 'Myth'. Well possibly Murali himself. Funny that;

"[Glenn] McGrath is bowling about 13 [degrees], [Jason] Gillespie about 12 and Brett Lee about 14 or 15," Muralitharan said on Monday in a Melbourne radio interview.

Glenn McGrath has never been tested to even suggest he was close to 12 degrees.

This is from the ICC website:
Advancing Illegal Action Testing

It is widely known that the ICC has invested in an ongoing project to develop sensors to detect suspected illegal bowling actions in a match situation. The ICC is also aware of the work of researchers and technology providers who are looking at alternative methods to measure suspected illegal bowling actions in match situations.
As none of these methods have been developed to the stage of being ready to use in an international match, the ICC continues to use the tried method of laboratory testing to assess the legality of a bowler’s action, with a focus on ensuring the bowler replicates his match action in the laboratory.

This was released on the 14th October 2014 after McGrath had retired.

So can anyone especially honestbarani point out what testing was carried out on McGrath or will he run away.

This doesn't seem right either.

So nobody knows what testing was done, how it was done, who did the testing, what the results of the testing were.

Isn't that how myths are created.

So McGrath has a 10 degree extension.

1. He was a chucker under the old law where no extension was permitted.
2. He was a chucker under the modified law, where only 7.5 degrees was permitted for fast-medium bowlers.
3. It needed the tolerance limit to be increased to 15 degrees so Mcgrath would not be a chucker.

My version of conspiracy theory.

McGrath did not have a 10 degree extension, there is no valid proof of that.
