Playing Selector: The team of the 1990's

Because I'm bored and it sounded like a good idea at the time, I'm opting to conduct a series of polls to select a team of the 1990's.

As always we'll select 2 openers, 3 middle order batsmen, a wicket-keeper, a spinner, two pacers, a 4th bowler who can be a spinner or quick depending on your preference and the final player depending on balance and the available options can be the all-rouder, or another batsmen or bowler.

Qualification is to play a Test between 1 January 1990 to 31 December 1999. However I implore you to pick players based on their performances in the 90's alone. Which you probably would, tbf.

I won't exclude any stats as Bangladesh weren't playing yet and Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka weren't that terrible for most of the 90's.

Polls to come up shortly.

Can't see which one of Ambrose, Donald or Akram he'd replace if it's isolated from 90-99 tbh. McGrath only really established himself in the test team in 95.

Just on that, Ambrose, Donald and Akram is an ideal pace trio. Height and accuracy and aggression+ skiddy extreme pace and aggression + left arm crazy swing and pace and aggression

Wasn't Gooch more of an 80s batsman? Had a couple of stirling years at the beginning of the 90s, but these pale when compared to Anwar, Slater, or Kirsten who were real products of the 90s.

I would have Slater in there but I loved watching him bat, also his last great series was in late '99(pretty sure he only got one ton after 2000)so he's kinda perfect for this poll

This is hardly cut and dry.Good idea for a thread

Yeah I seriously considered Slater and also Gary Kirsten as the other opener.

Great thread with lots of possibilities and has inspired an idea for one of my own. Back shortly...

These historical picks things can be interesting but they're not 'playing selector', are they? Contemporary selection is all about judging players in one moment in time. It's trying to figure out who is most likely to be the best player for the next match or series regardless of previous record, balanced with developing young players, how much experience is in the side, whether or not someone is fully fit and all sorts.

Weighing up one player's entire career against another is a completely different idea.

Possibly just to **** with the purists (not the exact word I mean but cant think of a better one at the moment to express my thoughts), none of M. Waugh, PAdS, Wasim or a specialist keeper make my team. Stewart has the most runs in the decade at an average of over 40 so he is in (blah, blah blah...his average is way less when he keeps etc.) I like Boon so he is also in as much on merit as preference.

Gooch
Taylor (capt)
Lara
Tendulkar
Boon
S. Waugh
Stewart (wkt)
Warne
Ambrose
Waqar
Donald

A bit more thinking time, I'm going with
1. M. Taylor (c)
2. S. Anwar
3. B. Lara
4. S. Tendulkar
5. M. Crowe
6. S. Waugh
7. I. Healy
8. W. Akram
9. S. Warne
10. C. Ambrose
11. A. Donald

Ambrose and McGrath could do the same job, Tomorrow I may think McGrath is better but both similar.
A lot of people unlucky to miss this side IMO

I personally chose Taylor because of several knocks that I was impressed with at the time and his captaincy.
Similarly I chose Healy over Flower even though the batting averages probably said differently
