Playing Selector: The team of the 1990's

kingkallis

International Coach
Best of 1990s

Saeed Anwar ( 3366 @ 46.10 )
Graham Gooch ( 4176 @ 51.55 )
Brian Lara ( 5573 @ 51.60 )
Sachin Tendulkar ( 5626 @ 58.00 )
Steve Waugh ( 6213 @ 53.10 )
Aravinda de Silva ( 4448 @ 46.82 )
Alec Stewart ( 6407 @ 40.80, 142 dismissals @ 1.94 per innings )
Wasim Akram ( 289 w @ 21.45, SR 48.9 )
Shane Warne ( 351 w @ 25.66, SR 64.3 )
Curtly Ambrose ( 309 w @ 20.14, SR 52.2 )
Allan Donald ( 284 w @ 21.83, SR 45.7 )

Ian Healy, Waqar Younis, Glenn McGrath, Mark Taylor, Gary Kirsten, Micheal Slater, Mark Waugh, Courtney Walsh, Muttiah Muralitharan, Anil Kumble all came close but this team looks much more balanced.

Some good lineups - takes me back to when I got into cricket.

Hadn't thought of Andy Flower - was pretty sure his keeping was nowhere near the standard of a Healy/Russell/Boucher but then you'd get around the need to look for a bowler who could bat to balance things up, hence my inclusion of Pollock which might have raised some eyebrows.

Stewart averaged nowhere near 40 as a keeper so it's a bit of a red herring to look at his career stats when he averaged way, way more as a specialist opener. There's a case for including him here on that basis alone, would certainly make the original 'long list' anyway.

Heath Streak is worth a mention in this thread too - carried a very weak bowling unit for several years and was a quality operator who could have walked into any test side in the decade.

01. Michael Slater
02. Garry Kirsten
03. Brian Lara
04. Sachin Tendulkar
05. Aravinda de Silva
06. Steve Waugh
07. Ian Healy
08. Shane Warne
09. Wasim Akram
10. Curtly Ambrose
11. Glenn McGrath

Glenn McGrath started in 1993 and was at his peak by the late 90s. The year 1997 was a good one - 63 wickets at 21 runs each, Strike Rate only 49 balls per wicket.

If we are just looking at averages then why even have a thread?
Prince EWS to select Mathew SInclair now IMO..

My team:
1 Gooch
2 Slater
3 Lara
4 Tendulkar
5 Aravinda
6 S Waugh
7 Healy
8 Akram
9 Warne
10 Donald
11 Ambrose

Waqar, McGrath, Azhar and Anwar were the toughest for me to leave out.

Jeez, that's a good bowling attack. Agree entirely with it. McGrath was great, but a touch below those 3 pacemen imho.

Probably select Taylor over Slater though as I don't think there's much between them with the bat, then it's a left/right opening combo and more importantly, means Tubby can be skipper!

No doubt, but Donald, Ambrose & Akram were even more impressive.

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
I think he made more runs in the 90s than nearly anyone, and a lot of tons opening in a tough era.

Not saying he's a certainty, but he belongs in the argument.
Don't disagree, he belongs in the conversation. My comment was more to Aldo saying he "absolutely" has to be in it.

Parore as good as Russell, Boucher and Healy.
I'd probably still pick Flower though.

Maybe too much bowling but couldn't find a no6 I really wanted to pick. Shame Jimmy Adams and Kambli didn't become the superstars everyone expected.

You mean Warne - anyone can keep to quicks.

Anyway Parore was tidier than Healy and just as good a sledger, so pick him.
Any keeper can be a 'stopper' to quicks, yes.

But anticipating difficult leg-side catches, diving in front of first slip, standing up to medium quicks like Waugh or maybe McMillan, that sort of thing. No.

the team can just use a leg slip and back stop to cover flower's ass. his batting average is too good to be overlooked

To open the attack:

The openers poll is still open, but it should be closed in my eyes. As it stands these two are unlikely to be toppled.
