Split keeping duties

Migara

Cricketer Of The Year
The current SL test squad has three keepers (Sanga, Kaushal Silva and Chandimal) playing, all are 1st choice keepers in FCC or in limited over formats. Unfortunately all three are prolific top order players. This will force one of them to bat at #7. The reasons are of fatigue setting in during long innings.

Now, keeping can be shared if the innings is long. Has any one tries splitting keeping jon between two players in the side so they alternatively do the job, even inside the same match?

Interesting, maybe you could have one keep mainly against the quicks and then swap with a "specialist" in the last innings for the spinners.

I've had a bowl in club cricket a couple of times. Don't think I've seen a genuine split-keeping situation at a decent level though, when it happens it's almost always due to injuries of some kind. (Or a Michael Clarke troll over)

Paul Gibb did for Les Ames in a test in SA when the latter's lumbago was playing up iir (what I read) c. The potential for the 2 to play swapsies was always there bcos Gibb, though playing as a batsman at the time, was a keep.

Might lead to a bit of healthy competition and increased concentration, not a bad idea tbf.

I can see a place for it but only in really unlikely circumstances, like two of your best four or five batsmen being good wicket keepers. You could still bat them both in the top order without worrying about the keeping taking too much of a toll on their workload because it'd be shared.

It sort of applies to Sri Lanka at the moment but given their first reserve middle order bat is yet another wicket keeper, it'd probably make more sense to just put Chandimal up the order a bit, take the gloves off him and bring in another keeper to bat seven.

With the increased use of sub fielders, I think its a more practical idea than in years gone by, as ideally you don't want to be stopping the game for the changed keeper to pad up - least he can do it whilst subbed off (and the player he's replacing can de-pad in the same way)

Alas the specialist spinner keeper wouldn't work for that reason, unless you had 2 spinners on at a time.

I was kind of thinking they'd just rotate between sessions, or even drinks breaks.

Interesting how SL are full of keepers and pretty much none of the Indian top order bats can keep.. It would solve a lot of the issues they have with their line-up if a genuine bat could keep adequately.

Wouldn't solve much. If we had a Rootesque bowler in our top 6 it'd be much more handy.
