well Trescothick has overtaken Stewart, so Stewart is now a candidate for the top 7 again, along with Jonathan Trott, Ian Bell and Ben Stokes. and if one of these guys gets picked it'l push Flintoff down to 8.

but will fraser and broad be chosen? Or maybe Tuffers for a second spinner? Or maybe Moeen? The choice is yours CW:CC. If one of the last 4 get named, Flintoff bats 7.

Team atm

Trescothick
Cook
~
Root
Pietersen
Thorpe
~
Prior
~
Flintoff
~
Swann
~
Gough
~
Anderson

^that may be a little confusing, but I feel only the 1-2 and 11 are set in stone here.

kind of forced to go stewart or trott to avoid root at #3 but ideally i'd have broad in there. stokes and flintoff combo down the order in a world without prior would be good fun.

Its a farce Root makes the cut yet he is potentially an English ATG bat which on its own is very rare but till now he has not had one successful away tour ( a Windies away tour no longer holds any significance) until he does that there is no way he should be in a squad of XV let alone XI.

I guess an average of 89 on the last away tour doesn't count does it?

They've got high hopes.

You do realise West Inies drew that series 1-1 don't you?

29 tests on its own is a very small sample size based on 29 tests Trott would have been England's finest since Barrington. I have no doubt Root will one day be an England ATG if he keeps up but currently there are atleast half a dozen that deserve to be selected over him.

A 5-11 record is bad enough to completely discount all runs vs them? They're not Bangladesh pre-2015 Bangladesh.
yes but its still it does not compensate fr his failures in Aus and NZ. The success rate for Root on away tours is still 33% so jury is still out till he has couple of successful away trips.

Who the **** picked Root over Trott, honestly?

Trott should have been a lock, the only number 3 in the last 30 years who's actually done anything.

Far weaker than Australia, South Africa & Pakistan.

(Much) worse batting than India, but better bowling.
Better batting* than NZ, but slightly worse bowling.
Fewer ATGs than WI and SL but more depth.

Without Vaughan would have poor leadership and possibly bad team 'culture'. Long tail too.

* If Crowe were eligible batting would be about equal.
