shamless rip-off of bagapath's popular idea. thanks to teja for this particular suggestion, as it does seem like it'l be very hard to make this team as there a ton of batsmen with around the same average. the bowlers might be a bit more straightforward but we'll see won't we

will use the exact same blueprint as bagapath's xi, the poll systems will be:

keeper
2 opening bowlers
2 opening batsmen
spinner (lol it will be a blowout vote)
all rounder (lol again)
3 middle order batsmen
and then the last option will either go to a 6th specialist bat, 2nd all-rounder or 4th bowler. itl be simply be made up of runner-ups

players who had a stint as both opening batsmen and middle order batsmen (vaughan, stewart, butcher etc) will get a chance in both polls... perhaps. Stewart will be an interesting one because if he's chosen as keeper well then i guess he's not needed in the other polls.

will wait til the final position in the sub-continent xi is locked up before starting. will probs do 2 at a time like bagapath

and like him, i will use this this topic as home base to post the updated team and all the new poll links.

I'm wondering if people will want Flintoff at 6? I would prefer to pick him as one of the 4 bowlers, and pick a bat at 6.

Overall, I have 8 names locked in and will be surprised if they don't gain selection, which according to my maths mean we've got 3 reasonably difficult choices.

Close to my XI, only I'd probably have Vaughan opening with Cook for the right/left combination. Vaughan did in fact average 45 as an opener including 10 tons and I'd back him ahead of Trescothick against the very best attacks.

Also that means he can skipper the side.

^ That is actually a very good team, better than would have guessed we'd field with no bad players and a lovely balance + variety. I would fancy Alec Stewart over Prior by a nose though, 15 hundreds and him at 6 far more solid than Prior (who was an excellent player don't get me wrong).

Vaughan*
Cook
Root
Pietersen
Thorpe
Stewart +
Flintoff
Broad
Swann
Gough
Anderson

Simon Jones would also be pushing Gough hard for me. Small sample size though I know.

Vaughan although I would like either to be honest, the captaincy shades it though. Vaughan was good leader, aggressive and instinctive even if he is a bit of a plank.

Updated my post with team I'd plump for though.

Actually you may have convinced me on Stewart edging out Prior as keeper. It's easy to forget he played as a specialist bat for several years. And fair comment about Jones pushing Gough, but not quite playing enough to warrant the change.

Stewart actually scored most of his runs opening (at his best average as well). Averaged 44 as an opener. Him and Cook with Vaughan at 3?

Cook
Stewart
Vaughan
Root
KP
Thorpe
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Jones
Anderson

I prefer the team I listed previously but that is another potential option I suppose. Lack of a proven number 3 is the big impediment so far, although Root should really be able to handle it.

Certainly doesn't look any weaker on paper.

The lack of a good captain is a pretty big flaw in the team tbh. Should've gone with Vaughan over Root in hindsight.

Not to beleaguer the Stewie point but he also played a lot of matches against McGrath/Warne, Ambrose/Walsh, Pollock/Donald and Wasim/Waqar so he faced more quality opposition than most English batsmen.
