Playing selector: ATG Test English XI from 'the modern age'(debuted in FC after 1980)

Yep on Stewart, if you pick Prior as keeper then Stewart simply has to be one of the openers... anyone who doesn't pick him can't have watched much cricket through the 90s...

Stewart
Vaughan
Root
Pietersen
Thorpe
Flintoff
Prior *
Swann
Gough
Sidebottom
Anderson

Initially had Broad but I don't much like the four right arm seamer brigade, so Sidebottom's the left field pick....

There's a case for having Stewart as captain. The 1998 win against SA under his , er, stewardship isn't to be sniffed at, nor his one-off when he oversaw the 2000 miracle against WI after we'd been absolutely stuffed in the previous test. Other than that, there was only his 3-1 loss down under, which could happen to anyone. And obviously he should be allowed to open without having to keep wicket. Having him in charge also allows me to pick the pre-captaincy Vaughan whilst still averaging something ludicrous as an opener.

Beyond that, it's tricky to judge the 1990's generation against the more recent crop, as the former's stats are less impressive but had to contend with stronger opposition and far less consistent selectors.

Maybe something like this:

1. Stewart (c)
2. Vaughan
3. Trott
4. Pietersen
5. Thorpe
6. Flintoff
7. Prior
8. Swann
9. Gough
10. Fraser
11. Anderson

Trescothick and Cook unlucky. Especially Tres, who really seemed to have cracked it by 2005 and then was forced out by illness.
Root would probably be there if we were doing this in 5 years' time.
A real shame that Jones has mostly been injured, or he'd have provided something different amongst the RAFMs.
