Playing Selector: all time Sub Continental XI

International Captain
Planning to conduct a series of polls to select the all time subcontinental XI for tests using players from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Will keep the team's composition as

2 openers
3 middle order batsmen
1 wicket keeper
2 pace bowlers
1 spinner

1 - fourth bowler, from the top runners up of the other bowler polls
1 - all rounder or fourth middle order batsman

If this sounds ok, will start the polls from tuesday

Should be fun, can see a hell of a lot of unhappy people (Jono when Kohli is left out) as the batting is going to be tough to sort out.

and baga while you're at it do some write ups on each of the players if possible.

You do write well IMO

Just going off the top of my head:

Gavaskar
Sehwag
Dravid
Tendulkar
Miandad
Dhoni +
Shakib
Imran
Wasim
Murali
Waqar

Shakib in as a nod to Bangladesh tbh, but I think he balances the side pretty well with Dhoni batting at 6 followed by him and Imran. 5 top tier bowlers too.

Shakib is a fine cricketer.... but he's no Kapil Dev, and you already have the most successful spinner of all time in the XI.

Not sure Kapil is going to add that much to what I've selected, as good as he was, he's not a better pace bowler than any of Imran, Wasim or Waqar. As I said, including Shakib as a not to Bangladesh. He might not be quite top tier, but nearly four wickets per test as a fifth bowler is better than adequate, and it could be argued he's on par with Kapil as a batsman.

And if this mythical team were to play half their games in the subcontinent, two spinners and a quick is ideal.

Kapil would be 12th man in my 11, and I guess if we were playing in the right conditions he'd come in for Shakib,

Just realised you've also not included Sangakkara. I mean if not as a specialist batsman, then at the very least as the keeper ahead of Dhoni. This is a test side after all & Sanga has to be close to twice the batsman Dhoni is in this form.

And surely Imran is the only choice as skipper.

Ah, **** yeh.

Sanga's gotta be there, maybe instead of Miandad?

Why not ahead of Dhoni? I mean it only strengthens your side. Also, did you overlook Imran as captain? Many cricket historians argue he was one of the top 2-3 test captains of all time & certainly the best from the sub-continent.

Didn't name a captain. Certainly don't mind Sanga being in, just forgot him tbh

Six slots are more or less locked already

Gavaskar
Sehwag
Sangakara (wk) --- batting position to be fixed afterwards
Akram
Waqar
Murali

Will let these polls stay on for a couple of days and then start the middle order polls.

I may have a sub-poll if Dravid makes it to the middle order to take a final call on whether Dravid or Sanga should bat at 3. That will decide the number of slots for all-rounders / bowlers. (Dravid can't bat anywhere other than at 3. So if he loses the sub-poll to Sanga he is out of the team).

In the mean time you can read those threads above to understand how and why CW is choosing these players.
There is also the bonus of a very good joke by Migara in one of those threads with a pun on "turning matches". I still don't get it. But I am confident I will laugh once it is explained to me.

i never got the importance people placed on batting positions. like it is important to an extent regarding new balls, old balls, spinners and pace but the the importance some people put on it befuddles me. dravid being 3 or nothing is strange to me. whether your an opener, 3 or 6 you'll eventually face up to the exact same bowler in the exact same conditions, at various parts of your innings. all throughout one series. thats if youre any good mind you
