i never got the importance people placed on batting positions. like it is important to an extent regarding new balls, old balls, spinners and pace but the the importance some people put on it befuddles me. dravid being 3 or nothing is strange to me. whether your an opener, 3 or 6 you'll eventually face up to the exact same bowler in the exact same conditions, at various parts of your innings. all throughout one series. thats if youre any good mind you
Each batsman has his own style. his own pacing. his own strengths and weaknesses. a player like dravid is ideal to take on the bowlers when they are fresh and build an innings in his own time. an allan border on the other hand plays better when the match situation is defined and tapers his game according to the demands of the team. bats well with the tail and sweeps the spinners out of the rough.

see... there is no hard and fast rule i agree. an aggressive sehwag on top of the order or an aggressive gilchrist at no.7 can alter the game any way they want. similarly a dour dravid at 3 and a dour chanders at 6 can stabilise their team with equal impact. but still it is very important that a batsman bats in the position that benefits his team the most. there may not be much of a difference between numbers 4 and 5. but no 3 and no 6 are specialist positions and can't be so easily interchanged.

if i had a penny for every time a number 4 came out to bat like an over or two after the first wicket fell i'd be a rich man. i feel i can easily say 3-4 and 5-6 are more interchangable than 4-5

sometimes the openers put together a decent partnership and number 3 may as well be 4-6, he comes out with a license to attack. sometimes 2 fall in the first hour of an innings so 4 may as well be 3, they both have to now steady the ship. i dont think exactly 1 wicket falling in the first hour of an innings is some kind of outlier here, i imagine these 3 scenarios happen around as often as each other.

i know this goes against long standing cricket theory but ive been a fan and a player since i was old enough to hold a bat and have always found specialist positions a little silly. im not saying its lucky underwear levels of superstition but i think a lot of it is mental and can be affected by form. obviously opening the batting is different.

in odi's it makes sense, soley because 6 will obviously be coming in later than 3 so he has less time to bat. thus he gets the role of closing an innings. im getting sidetracked here but yeah basically my point is, if dravid gets voted amongst the top 3 middle order batsman, let him play 4 or 5 if he cant nab 3. being one of the best 3 middle order batsman means youre one of the best 3 middle order batsman right? so you shouldnt be cut for a specialist 5 who is a worse player than you and doesnt rank as a best 3 middle order batsman.

choose the best 3 then shuffle them around to what you think best suits the team

having said all that i still find your post interesting and think the idea of specialist batsmen are cool in theory and add depth and strategy, which is good for any sport. i just think people want it to matter more than it does in reality

Let's be generous and say that a 100,000 FC games have been played to date, and another 20,000 LO games. If the number 4 came out to bat an over or two after the first wicket fell in say, 20% of these games, then you would have approximately 240 pounds

When you've picked 10, the last poll ought to be ought of all the players who haven't been picked yet but got more than a few votes, so as people can choose the balance they want along with player.

Sounds good. Would add Hazare and Inzi in the batters, and Gupte, Bedi, and Qadir in the bowlers
