Minnow Bashing

tbf to the Steve Waugh thing above, he feasted on minnows after his 1991 dropping because Australia were so far ahead of everyone else at that point, that every other team could be categorised as a minnow.

Heard a rumour Jono saw the thread title and wondered why there was a thread about masturbation in cricket chat

Jason Gillespie - averages 247 with the bat against Bangladesh, which is slightly above his career average of 18.73.

Might as well consider all batting performances against India as minnow bashing.
Fully approve of this. Atleast all overseas batting performances. Our overseas bowling is so unimaginably bad that I don't think there's be much statistical difference between performances vs us and bang/Zim.

The discussion is more about whether lack of quality bowling support has a positive effect on the number of wicket you take each match (ie. there is more wickets available) or negative effect (ie. lack of pressure means batsmen can try and block you out). I suspect that for spinners the effect is positive as try to play out a spinner defensively does not work as it would with a paceman. They can bowl pretty much all day. The sample size is not great enough to get a definite answer though.
I have seen an analysis some where, they calculated the support vs performance for bowlers. IIRC Marshall and Murali had no effect from support, while Warne thrived on support. Hadlee was better when there was no support. Will try to find the source.

so here is some food for thought - someone said that shane warne would have had well over 1000 wickets if he had played bangladesh more, and murali would have less than 800 if he had not played them as much.

so question of the day is what players would have significantly better records or worse records if they had/hadn't played all of the minnow teams more - and how much by?
It's a bit of a stretch to suggest Warne would have got over 1000 wickets unless he played them every week. It would be the best part of 30 Tests even if he took all 10fers.

And how exactly are you considering Pakistan bowling attack as a minnow? They have always had a decent bowling attack.
well considering there were eight teams he played i went vs four one way and vs four the other to try to get a fairly even sample size

Darren Bravo, averages 33 against Australia, England, New Zealand and Pakistan. And 52 against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India.

Did see an interesting stat about Kallis recently, can't remember if it was on the coverage or maybe here somewhere.

Averaged 75+ when coming in after a partnership of more than 200; Ponting/Tendulkar only in the low 30s. All runs are good runs, etc. etc. but showed a bit why people, for a long time, didn't feel that he was a batsman who affected the game as much as the others he was bracketed with.

To attempt to beat him with that sort of stick requires a lot more detail. For instance, how many times he came in after a partnership of that size. I would suspect not very many.

NZ would have lost a couple of Test Matches vs Bangladesh if not for Vettori

Also

Murali took 112 Wickets @ 20.06 in 16 Tests vs England
Warne took 195 Wickets @ 23.25 in 36 Tests vs England
