They should make a 9 team test world cup

3 randomly chosen groups of 3. Teams play each member of their group once.

Top 1 from each group and the best ranked 2nd placed team go through to the semi finals. Use County Cricket's point system so it all but guarantees a clear cut 4th best team. If there is still a tie.... use a bowl off or something lol

Then the semis then the final. All in all thats only 12 matches, which is about 2 months if there is no overlap between matches at all(I'm not sure if match overlap would be a good idea) Have it in England, the home of cricket. Lots of classic grounds. Play the final at Lords, duh.

Make this happen ICC

I'm personally a fan of the league format for a Test World Cup.

Top 8 teams, 7 rounds, no semifinals or final, so 35 days of cricket with perhaps 20-25 rest days to make it around 2 months.

so you'd have all games being played at once? That might not work as well for viewers and stuff

Well, for one, day/night Test cricket might have taken off by then, so viewing times wouldn't really be an issue. An Oceania Test World Cup would start with a morning game in New Zealand and finish with a daynighter in Perth.

I actually have a suspicion that the real reason behind day/night Test cricket being brought in is as a preparation for a Test World Cup of some sort. This is because it would become possible to saturate a channel with cricket for two months solid, almost 24/7. It would be epic.

Problem with a Test World Cup is that the final could be a Draw. Then what?

Prefer the league system too tbh. But something long-term. Like a 2 year long league where each side plays the other in 3 match series home and away. 8 teams in each division. At the end of the 2 years, your crown a winner, and you have promotions and demotions, and then restart.

I'd also allow sides to organise their own Test series outside of the league, to preserve series like the Ashes.

^what youre describing just sounds like the test ranking system.

for your first comment, make the final timeless. problem fixed

A timeless Test would be interesting, although they didn't work very well in the 30s - I think if there were to be one the preparation of the pitch would need to be thought about very carefully - if it was too good Tests could go on for ever, and that really would **** up the broadcaster's scheduling

I've always failed to see the point of a Test Championship. What purpose does it serve? Proper Test cricket is about 4 or 5 (or even 6) Tests series. Any reasonably feasible type of Test WC will kill the idea of proper Test cricket. IMHO we simply have to accept the a decent Test ranking is the only way to determine who is the best at Tests.

I want a test championship but I want it played across 2 seasons where each team plays everyone else home and away in 3 test series, then there's a final between the top 2 teams.

it just seems so similar to what we currently have though, but with a bit more equality

i want all the teams huddled in hotels in the same country at the same time. a world cup!

Love to see a timeless test. Let me correct that. I probably wouldn't watch it at all, I would scoreboard track it though. I imagine the tactic will be leave absolutely everything outside off stump and to attack things on the stumps. Similar to cricket today but even more watchful than what we currently see. Run rates to be 2.5-3.0 runs per over.

I think in the modern age we'd be getting a 7 day match worst case scenario. Besides in this hypothetical it'd only be for the knockout games

Eyes not spreadsheets
If they ditched the top 4 idea then they sure as hell won't go for either a 3 groups of 3 (far too short a span and leaves too much to chance) or an all plays all 8 team league (which would require considerably longer than the proposed 2 months).

i) whats the top 4 idea?

ii) what do you think is the ideal format for a test world cup? regardless of whether you think one could ever work/will ever happen

A timeless Test would probably result in most teams having to play two specialist spinners. So as someone who follows NZ and Australia, I think this idea is terrible.
