Will we ever see a pure wicket-keeper selected to play tests for Australia again?

Not any time soon, because Nevill's glovework is better than any 'pure keeper' around and he #canbat too.

Nevill might be the best gloveman who actually plays for their test team in the world at the moment. Not exactly a competition of goliaths mind you.

I

Sure, but we're talking marginally.

Sort of recall there were rumblings (probably from Warne) that Darren Berry should play over Gilchrist (or that Gilchrist would still play but as a batsman). That's kinda what we are talking about in this thread I guess.
Warne would have had Berry in over Healy too, though...

Think specialist glovemen could make a return to the highest level in the future but think this era means it's very unlikely we'll ever get situations where the best gloveman is a guy who can barely bat. The best keeping talents will get drilled on their batting from an early age to the extent where they're at least competent for a 7/8.

I think its actually more likely gun young batsmen who can keep a little bit will have their keeping skills honed than the other way around.

The days of specialist wicket keepers are dead guys. Not just in international cricket, even in state and grade cricket you rarely see a wicket keeper who isn't a decent bat, and if you do they & the coaches are doing everything they can to remedy it.

Nah, the guy who keeps wicket for the best white ball team in the world (no 1 in t20 and 2 in odi) is averaging 11.76 for his last 31 ODIs and 14.33 for his last 18 T20s. But Ronchi isn't even that great a keeper!

remember when i kept on advocating picking a specialist keeper for T20s and then Aus picked Nev in that role and he didn't stop slamming sixes. what a guy, what a world.

That's with batting taken into account, I'd have thought. Could have sworn Warne said in a book Berry was his number 1 pure 'keeper.

Ah, think he put Healy ahead of Berry in that list though, which is where I probably got it from. But yeah, Heals' batting was a bit above Chuck's.

I also thought I'd heard him rate Berry higher some time in the 90's, the pure gloveman thing I mean. For the life of me I couldn't think of a single time Warne had played against Russell, though. Quick poke on Cricinfo and Gloucs played against the touring Aussies in '93 and '97 as the only times Warne faced him. So, technically true but....

it's like when he says world series cricket is the best cricket ever played, he's trying to look cool and hipster-y in some weird way
