One of the weirdest statistics ever is that Astle had 16 100s and Jones 0, even though Jones had a higher average.
Yeah, incredible that he was averaging in the 40s for much of his career as well, before it declined late on. Although again, very few kiwis scored hundreds in Jones era, which from memory was from about 1988-95.

That looks quite even, but don't forget 100s were much more of a rarity in Astle's era 1994-2006 than Guppy's.

I'd suggest the 16 tons Astle scored between 1994-2006 wouldn't be that far behind the 100s all the other kiwis playing in that era put together.
I disagree.

The Tendulkar/Anwar/Jaysuriya opener era brought in all the centuries. Cannot blame Astle's poor NZ forerunners to displace modern players.

Plus Grenidge, Haynes, Viv Richards, G Marsh and Jones even Gooch from the era before Astle's meant they weren't totally uncommon. Viv was special in that he was middle order.

Turner's ratio of 3 centuries in 40 odd matches is fairly high. He could have brought that era much earlier for NZ.

Was talking about NZ'ders. Will check when I get home later, but pretty sure if you do a stats guru search of hundreds scored by NZ'ders in Astle's era he'd have close to half of them himself. That was my point, but yeah the likes of Haynes, Jones etc did rack a few tons up in the 80s/90s.

Flem274*

123/5
Nathan Astle
Glenn Turner
Martin Crowe
Ross Taylor
Kane Williamson
Chris Cairns (4)
Brendon McCullum (wk)
Richard Hadlee (1)
Daniel Vettori (5)
Kyle Mills (2)
Shane Bond (3)

Williamson at #5 would be the ultimate 20-40 overs accumulator, and Ross gets more time at #4 to get going. Crowe being the best player of pace bats at #3.

Lets see how a specialist death bowler does, screw batting depth. Dunno if the sim cares at all about this sort of thing, or whether someone like Larsen's miserliness might have been more useful but oh well. It's too hard to make a significantly different team otherwise

1. Turner
2. Guptill
3. Williamson

5. Crowe
6. McCullum (wk)
7. Hadlee (1)
8. Vettori (4)

(this is no way what my all-time NZ ODI team would be ftr...)

There are no sixth bowlers in this so you can change Harris to a batsman if you like (you have about half an hour to change if so).

1. Ryder
2. Anderson
3. Williamson (5)
4. Ronchi
5. Lance Cairns (4)
6. Taylor
7. B McCullum

It was hard to leave out C Cairns, Twose and Turner.

Give me a warning before you simulate it. I might tinker with the batting order. Might be need a pinch hitter up the top. Was going to anchor Turner. But Jesse is just so swift.

Tough decision between Boult and Hadlee or Lance Cairns. Boult has the far superior strike rate but Hadlee is so miserly. Lance has the batting and miserly bowling.

He can pick Lance Cairns, Oram, Ryder etc. but he'll have to wait a few days for me to add the feature to the simulator that will allow me to play teams made up of anyone.

Kane is worrying me. His economy rate of 5.6 almost means McCullum should be dropped for Chatfield or Larsen. Chatfield has an amazing ability to stick around and not score runs with the bat!

I see the simulator has a spin function.

Are some of the pitches turners? Is it unwise to go in with 5 seamers?

Tbf if Oram is not in the 24 best ODI cricketers we have produced, then something has gone seriously wrong.

Yeah Hadlee's economy of 3.3 is murder in this simulator. Even ties up AB de Villiers sometimes.
Yeah - I was wondering about AB De Villiers. Is it better to drop McCullum and go with Boult and snag that extra wicket, or Chatfield/Larsen to tie him up, or just hope Brendon scores the extra runs and have Kane bowling. Its what I'm weighing up at the moment.

That SA bowling line up has plenty of wickets in it.
