The Richie Benaud Tribute Draft

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
As pointed out, it would be sacrilege to have this draft and not pick a leg spinning allrounder who went on to captain Australia.. And hence the obvious choice... The People's Chump Steve Smith ;)

The normal awards that everyone else has
T

Ian Healy- AB can concentrate on batting. Gun keeper, the best I've seen, plus good bat. I want a top class keeper with MacGill in the side. I've got five high calibre bowlers and a top six I love, plus a looooong tail. Plus my man Miller. One of my fave teams I've drafted.

01. Gordon Greenidge
02. Geoff Boycott
03. Ian Chappell
04. Brian Lara
05. Keith Miller * (2)
06. AB DeVilliers

Rod Marsh is a bit of an unusual choice, but Richie Benaud chose him as one of his 3 ATG keepers (the others were Gilchrist and Healy) when compiling his 'Greatest XI' team.

Marsh was sensational standing back to Thommo, and I reckon that Richie would enjoy having Marsh keep to his own bowling. So;

01. Graeme Smith
02. Conrad Hunte
03. Ted Dexter
04. Graeme Pollock
05. Neil Harvey
06. Tony Greig
07. Mike Procter
08. Rod Marsh+
09. Richie Benaud*
10. Alan Davidson
11. Jeff Thomson

In short, I reckon that Richie would thoroughly enjoy both captaining and watching that side - which IMO is what a 'tribute' team is all about.

Couldn't decide on the captain. Three very good captains in Hutton, May and Sobers. But, went with May ultimately.

Invincibles,

Alec Stewart (wk)
Virender Sehwag
Rahul Dravid
Mahela Jayawardena (C)
Shiv Chanderpaul
Michael Clarke
Daniel Vettori
Wasim Akram
Dale Steyn
Jim Laker
Joel Garner

I've got a long tail, with batting up to Wasim Akram.Steyn too could bat.I've got 5 bowling options,in a left arm spinner in Vettori, the right arm offie Jim Laker, plus the great man Wasim Akram and the best test fast bowler Dale Steyn followed by the intimidating Joel Garner. My batsmen comprises of quality batting in Stewart and Sehwag, who'll go after the bowlers early around and put the opposition on the back foot from the word go.Followed by the Wall, and Mahela Jayawardena who are equally good at negotiating both pace and spin. Then comes Chanders and Clarke, who'll be vital to maintain the composition of the team.Vettori and Akram would bat left handed meaning there'll be nice blend of the right handed top heavy batsmen plus the these two left handers. There's a lot of experience in my side, and a lot of test captains in this team.Plenty of individual heroes are here.It will take some quality to beat this time. And furthermore,I've got some wonderful fielders in Dravid,Jayawardena and Clarke who are experts in slip catching. So catches won't be dropped so easily.
