Was rubbish with my following of the season last year. Going to try and do better this year.

How can we possibly have 18 counties, and no professional contract for Michael Bates?

18 year-old SA quick, Brad Wheal, is set to debut for Hants. Can't believe how quick that took when he was meant to just join the academy.

Bates' FC average is 21.20; over seasons 2012-2014 it is 24.35.

In his last game for Hampshire 2nd XI he batted at three and made 160.

These are the FC batting averages of the players likely to keep in most FC matches this summer:

    Derby: Tom Poynton 21.38
    Durham: Phil Mustard 30.51
    Essex: James Foster 37.59
    Glam: Mark Wallace 29.10
    Glos: Gareth Roderick 47.63
    Hants: Adam Wheater 38.48
    Kent: Sam Billings 32.75
    Lancs: Alex Davies 27.73
    Leics: Ned Eckersley 34.67
    Middx: John Simpson 30.04
    Northants: Ben Duckett 30.85
    Notts: Chris Read 36.83
    Somerset: Alex Barrow 21.27
    Surrey: Gary Wilson 34.04
    Sussex: Matt Prior 39.25
    Warks: Tim Ambrose 34.02
    Worcs: Ben Cox 23.47
    Yorks: Andy Hodd 28.92

Bates' batting numbers are at the bottom end of the group, but would not be the lowest. However, they were never going to be the "enticing" part of the package... he is also arguably the best pure keeper in the country, which you would imagine ought to be worth a little, all the more so in the shorter forms where skills standing up are all the more relevant.

    Wiltshire's gain...

Niall O'Brien will be keeping for us, adds a bonus run

A a couple on there who are getting on a bit in age though, surprising if he's that good of a proper keeper

Sanga and KP against University students?

Although I hear Oxford MCCU are pretty decent as Uni sides go.

Sanga's not in the Surrey squad, but KP is. The Oxford batting has struggled in both games so far but their seamers bowled very well at times against Middlesex earlier in the week.

Surrey: Gareth Batty (capt), Zafar Ansari, Rory Burns, Steven Davies, Matthew Dunn, Ben Foakes, Aneesh Kapil, Stuart Meaker, Kevin Pietersen, Jason Roy, Vikram Solanki, Chris Tremlett, Gary Wilson

Tough being a keeper or a spinner. Generally only one spot going for those positions. Once Kieswetter went down injured I was surprised they didn't bring in Bates especially as they have plenty of allrounders like Gregory, C Overton, and Groenwald who are going to be batting 8-10 possibly to cover Bates weakness. Notice with Rehmann playing this season for Somerset, Dockrell and Leach are gonna be both stuck playing 2nd xi cricket all season in all likelihood.

Can't wait for the new season.

    Really looking forward to

    1) Seeing if James Vince can help Hampshire stay up. In all likelihood he's gonna need to score a lot of runs to make up for the shortfall of the bowlers. If he does he's gonna be close to England.
    2) Hopefully see the left armers injury free after a horrid last season. Mills, Topley and Willey could all play for England this year if they have a good run of fitness.
    3) Charlie Morris. Really interested to see how he goes in the first division. His season last year seems to have gone slightly underrated but a complete season (16 championship games) from a rookie bowler was some achievement and had good figures. Often takes players until their late 20's to achieve the kind of consistency he hit last season. Good signs and has being working on increasing pace over the close season and so if that progresses and he's more mid 80s as opposed to 80mph and mantains the consistency he'll be talked about a lot and. Whatever he does though it's gonna be a struggle for Worcestershire.
    4) Seeing if Surrey live up to expectations. Anything short of promotion will be a humiliation for Surrey. Sangakarra, KP, Roy, Davies middle order. Ridicilous bowling coverage. Personally I'm hoping for progression from the young english brigade in Ansari, Burns, Roy, Foakes, Curran, Dunn. Meaker still has a chance with England should he become injury free.
    5) More parochially as a Gloucestershire fan I'm cautiously optimistic about our fast bowling. Fuller, Payne, Norwell and Miles is a decent and improving second division quartet and they've probably had enough cricket now for their bodies not to break down so often. Norwell in particular really came on through the second half of last year and Fuller when he is fit is an asset. NO depth beyond those four but still first time for a while I've felt some optimism.

Durham to win the championship. Hastings, Onions and Rushworth to take loads of wickets.
    Worcs and Hamps relegated.
Surrey and someone to get promoted.
