well Papps has got his foot in the door with selection for the ODI squad........

me thinks if he makes a fist of it he could well follow up with a Test squad place - just depends on how much the selectors think of Jones ............

similarly if some of the middle order fails then we see Sinclair back in contention with his S.O.O. century as opener, along with Fulton again providing some resistance after early wickets........

Vincent is going to struggle big time to regain squad selection & this injury could not have come at a worst time for him.........currently Astle, Sinclair, Fulton would be ahead of him for selection to either Test or ODI squads, and the likes of How & Taylor must be pushing hard............

interesting comment from Bracewell about looking for specialists in the various designated roles rather than 'allrounder' types......will Vincent get another opportunity to show / find his role / niche, or has he already been tagged as a 'jack of all trades' and no longer applicable re the above comment??????

finally it was also interesting to read that when Astle returns to the ODI team it will be as OPENER!!!!! Does this then mean that he will open with Fleming or will Fleming drop back down the order if Papps succeeds?

Also interesting to read Bracewell mention about Papps' 'keeping giving the selectors further flexibility & options - does this mean that if Papps succeeds as Opener that McCullum could loose his place for Astle?

So many possibilities the head spins - much will depend upon performances during the ODI series & then squad selection for the Tests..........

:)

I know I've asked this elsewhere but..........

what's Sinclair's batting like at the moment............is he moving his feet etc???????

his recent stats in the Shield have been impressive (esp the ton in the S.O.O.) - is he moving well enough to be a genuine contender for squad selection again, or does he still retain those flaws that will be shown up by an international attack????

:)

Well, Sinclair's domestic stats have always been pretty. But he hasn't been able to transfer it 'fully' to the international game.

When has Lou Vincent ever been touted as a jack of all trades? Last time I checked he was a batsman...:rolleyes:

Lol probably a reference to his wicket keeping, probably bowls some handy medium pace too :)

yeah it's been his footwork, or rather the lack of it, that's been his downfall at international level. I was just wondering if he'd improved this or are we still seeing the Sinclair of old, in which case the selectors probably won't have a bar of him no matter what he does...........

so far as Vincent being 'jack-of-all-trades'...........I was referring to the different roles he has undertaken within the National teams...
*Test Opener;
*ODI Opener;
*ODI middle order;
*ODI 'keeper;
*ODI back-up 'keeper;
etc..........

Bracewell's comments indicated that he is looking for specialists in specialist roles and does not intend to use bits & pieces players or make shift players by playing them out of position etc........(he didn't actually say all that - just the bit about specialists - but that's the logical interpretation, esp as he has said that Astle will be selected in ODIs as Opener).......

hence my comments re Vincent as no one has had more roles to play than him............no wonder his batting has suffered as he doesn't know if he's arthur or martha.......

Sincliar is still very much a hands player with excellent innings stamina. He could be OK on our typical Feb/March pitches, but probably only as a stop-gap measure at the top level. Sinclair would not fill me with confidence as far as touring England is concerned, for example.

Selectors are more prone to busywork than resignation, and I think there is a point where you can look so exposed they would rather choose any 16+ male in the country than re-select you.

Sinclair has no doubt flirted with this. Gary Stead and Matthew Bell did even more than that.

Sorry for us Kiwis taking over the official thread somewhat.
Speaking of names, what do you know about Albie Morkel?

Tell me something about his appearance, so I can get :frog: or :alien8: out of my head...

Can anyone tell me how long Nicky Boje has been out of the game because I take its been a while since hes been in the national team due to injury or something.

I wondering this because everytime I saw him play against us he got huge scores and I mean huge off very little deliveries and the odd wicket here and there.

Also I have never seen Robin Peterson is he any good?

I am looking forward to the Vettori/Peterson,Boje match up, because Vettori under coach Bracewell will hopefully get the guidance he so badly needs and the Febuary/March pitches will suit him.

Peterson is a can't-bat-can't-bowl all-rounder of the highest calibre - either that or and indication of the paucity of SA spin bowling stocks.

Nicky Bojé did his cruciates in the NatWest final in June 2003 and was out for several months.

1/ I think Nico has been out for a good 7-8 months, and I hope he gets back to his best...

2/ Robbie Peterson doesnt bare thinking about.. He is the kind of guy you would rather have carrying the drinks, even when you are playing on a raging turner.. (the Boje/Vettori matchup should be good tho)

I think he is currently sporting a rather fine Aussie style mullet... Actually a proper job, rather than Gillespie's effort... Ive never seen him live tho....

And if you want
:alien8: :alien8: :alien8:

then look no further than Vasbert Drakes...

Oh right. I thought you were referring him as a keeper. I don't think the selectors have really seriously considered Vincent as the keeper for NZ.

Well I want Vincent in the middle-order, where it suits his style of batting more.

If you want a 'jack of all trades' look no further then Wavell Hinds.

New ball bowler
Part time medium pacer
Part time 'keeper
No.3 bat
Opening bat
Middle order bat

No surprise to see N.D 114/9 against South Africa.
Even with 5 Black Caps they have no clue.

Butler is being carved up by Gibbs & Dippenaar, its almost certain he'll be the player to drop out of the NZ team on Friday.

Northern Districts were always going to struggle...if they couldn't score runs against any of the NZ domestic teams then how were they going to do it against South Africa?

Butler has suddenly fired up & he's taken 2 quick wickets (Prince & Rudolph)

Butler's done it again! this time it's Boucher.

This spell could prove to be a saviour for him.
