If you were picking a keeper for an all-time ODI side and you could only pick one of the three listed, who would you pick and why? Note: you can't pick any of them as specialist batsmen.

The skills of each are insane. But different.

Whichever you choose, it's a massive bonus to have your keeper be a legit top 6 bat, because it just makes balancing a side that has to have 5 bowlers so much easier.

At present I'd have both Dhoni and AB in my ATG middle order. Dhoni takes the gloves and I'd utilise AB's outstanding fielding.

Can mount a pretty decent argument for having all of them in an ATG side tbh.

For mine, still Dhoni just, because of the balance he brings, and the fact that he always keeps, while I suspect AB won't keep much with deKock in the team as well...

Seriously though I'd tend to lean towards Gilchrist because I think there's better lower middle lower middle order alternatives than there are opening alternatives, particularly given I'm inclined to pick five frontline bowlers in any ODI side. Dhoni was/is a better ODI player though.

Not Terrible
I think Gilchrist wouldn't get in to my team on batting alone, due to that I wouldn't pick him. AB vs. Dhoni is a difficult one, I think I need a year or two more of AB before I put him over Dhoni.

So Dhoni for now, but it's a strange exercise because I think Dhoni is the worst keeper of the lot. Would happily tinker any ATG XI to include any one of these three. They're all gun.

Team balance comes into it too. I'd say Gilchrist for the Aussie side he played in because what you lose in batting (if you got him cheap, you got him cheap in a hurry at least, which is useful in game planning), you gain in nicks taken over a lesser keeper like Dhoni or DeVilliers if you have blokes like McG, Gillespie, etc. who bowl for that. A different bowling unit might make you change your mind. Plus I think most of the damage done in your average LOI is in the first 15 and is a large reason why the Aussies won so much LOI cricket with him in the side. It's all very close, though, because all 3 are great at what they do, are amongst the first picked on the team sheet and have won an awful lot of of OD matches for their sides sometimes off their own bats.

I'd pick Gilchrist on the basis he's easily the best keeper of the 3 and I'd only have Tendulkar ahead of him as an opener. I wouldn't even consider ABdV as a keeper to be honest.

Tough choice. AB or Gilly definitley. Dhoni is good, especially in subcontinent, but not up with those two.

I'd have to go with Gilly just because he's the best gloveman.

been awhile since I've done it but last time i went with MSD for the opposite reason. Picked Jayasuriya as opener. I guess I wasn't picking 5 frontline bowlers

Ftr I was so disappointed when I found out that just because Jayasuriya scored two awesome tons at the SCG against Aus, he didnt have an amazing record against aus

AB's keeping is being way over rated here. Has he ever kept to a decent spinner?
Pfft.

Dun matter whether he has or hasn't, everyone knows the **** would be amazing at it.

Could probably keep to Warne, Murali and Bedi all bowling at once and take them all cleanly.

AB is easily the best batsman of the three and also probably the worst keeper. Or at least he kept less than the others. Not sure why you'd want to have him keep in an all-time XI, assuming the exercise is to pick the strongest theoretical team.

I'd probably pick Gilchrist and have him open, and pick someone else down where Dhoni would bat. Dhoni the better overall batsman though. Could definitely consider AB for a middle order spot by the end of his career.

This is a question which would take far too much time to answer holistically due to the four times in ODI history where they have changed radically.

What I'll say though is that despite all of them doing extremely well as a product of their circumstances, ABdV is the one I'd definitely back to adapt his game radically and prosper in either the 60 over era and the mid-late 90s extremely bowler friendly yet fast era of ODI cricket.

Better keeper than AB especially to spinners, he introduced the new stumping technique. Then you consider how many games Dhoni has changed and WON competitions for India and for a LONG period of time. Skipper factor too and ability to absorb pressure.

Gilly comes second after MS, massive player he was opening for Australia and tidy keeper with good success. AB last. SA have won nothing despite a good team for a start and AB doesn't keep already in tests and I am sure in ODI at times too.
