Wish Dhoni batted more freely

Since he has become older, captain and so on - he tends to end up batting responsibly lower down. I miss his free approach. Yes he is probably the greatest finisher ever in ODI's but imagine him higher up the order.

This is tests but he was a tiger here, long hair and all

We saw in the WC 2011 what he did in the final.

An out of form Dhawan and Rahane at number 3 in ODI's doesn't look too great. Kohli and Dhoni must bat higher as they are our best players and the latter in particular hardly faces any deliveries for a man of his skill!

Wish Dhoni would surprise us all and open one game

Good info on this in this article

Dhoni stifled by lack of late dashers | Cricket News | Carlton Mid ODI Tri-Series | ESPN Cricinfo

"All this has resulted in Dhoni's having to mix that caution and aggression because he knows he doesn't have impact finishers behind him. That flow that you want an innings to have at such times has eluded Dhoni of late. "That [caution] has been the case," Dhoni said. "It is not only in this game. That has been the case in the last four-five years at least. We have groomed [Ravindra] Jadeja to do that job. [R] Ashwin we all know can definitely bat. He is a good batsman but he is not someone who will clear big grounds. Overall that becomes slightly difficult."

Makes me think should we really go in with 5 specialist bowlers? I know Jaddu, Ash and Bhuvi can bat, but they are not usually big hitters with the exception of Jaddu - again he is not consistent.

I wish we played a batting all rounder at 7, someone like Yusuf Pathan. Thoughts? Rayadu is in the squad but it's too much to ask him and raina to bowl 5 overs each on a regular basis.

Good point Spark, that's what someone suggested elsewhere. Then Raina would have to bat at 6 though. The issue is with the lower order in general, maybe play both Patel and Jaddu and drop Ashwin. Provides some big hitting power.

Coronis:

He batted well in England. We won the ODI series too. Today he captained really well and pushed the run rate up.

Only way dhoni bat freely if he bat at 5 or above coz the seconds he start freely he loose his wicket, 24 and 19 we do not want from dhoni,
Let sanju Samson play for India please.

Yes Patel was wrongfully given out , even if jadoo not recover we still can play Patel only as spinner

5 specialist bowler need now coz of new rule of 5 player inside of 30yard circle, not easy to score 2 or 3 but good for 4, can you imagine how AB. VILLERS smash 149 even he came after 39 overs off
50 over game , 132 he scored in 4's. ( 16 sixes and 9 fours )

I think Dhoni does a great job.

I don’t think he would be as good a player if he tried to smash the ball from the very start especially outside of the subcontinent where I don’t think his technique would hold up.

Yes he could do it and has in the past but overall the reason he has an awesome record is because he gives himself that extra time that most other batsman don’t.

He'd have a better record imo if he didn't always try to absorb all the pressure and leave the toughest jobs for himself at the end.

There was this period in 08-10 iirc where he would promote himself ever so often and finish off games together with Yuvraj in huge partnerships. Was awesome. He rarely gets to bat for lengthy periods in ODIs now though because of the team structure, but at the end of the day it's no doubt helping the team.

Yuvi's actual stats may not say it, but he was critical to India's ODI lineup. Freed up Dhoni so much.

After what he did in the world t20 final I think he showed it's time to move on. A great in the odi format and probably still had something to offer but I think the right choice was made.

Disagree. Dhoni is one of our best players in ODI cricket and logic tells me he should face most deliveries. We simply have an unstable top order and no use Dhoni coming in at 50/5 and batting slowly because A) we are 5 down B) we have no big hitters to follow. He wouldn't score enough in this scenario for our bowlers to help us defend.

Would it not make more sense for our best players to come in early and deal with the most difficult period? Build a big platform and then these newer/crapper/out of form guys can take advantage. I hardly doubt Dhoni would flop at number 3 and no, I am not asking him to turn into Afridi as you suggest with 24 from 19. Kohli at 4 despite being the best in the world at 3, another issue.

I would play a line up like this in the wc unless certain players make an impact like Dhawan.

Rohit
Rahane
Kohli
Dhoni
Raina
Binny
Jaddu
Ashwin/Patel
BK
Shami
Ishant

Less deadweight here. 5 bowlers plus Binny/Raina. Big hitters. A more solid top order. I am sure the top 5 can last 40 overs if they put their mind to it and put up a good score. Then Binny, Jaddu for the last 10 with Ashwin and BK.

No point having a slow Rayadu just because he is a batsman or Dhawan who can't score even 5 runs currently. Better to reward the guys who are scoring or at least contributing in other disciplines.

Agree with this? Yuvraj brought shame to our team by playing the WT20 final like a Test innings for a not out! it was extremely selfish granted it's only a WT20 final but we had an opportunity to hold all 3 ICC championships at once which would have been a unique achievement, he cost us that opportunity and is rightly paying the price IMO.

Irrelevant to my point, which was when Yuvi was in his prime he helped Dhoni.
