Where does Virat Kohli rank amongst the ATG ODI batsmen?

The gold figure for Ganguly for me is his average of 41 in over 300 matches. Ganguly played from 1996-2004 mostly with a few matches after that. 1996-2004 or so, if you managed to average over 40 in ODIs, it was pretty special. Many of his contemporaries didn't. Anwar finished with 39, Inzamam with 39.5, M Waugh with 39.35, Gilly with 35.9 to name just a few.
Comparing only averages is meaningless, you have to look at their strike rates.

Gilchrist's greatest asset was that he always scored at a run a ball. If he was only going to make 10 runs, he didn't waste the teams' time doing so and when things came off he basically won the match. I'd have him opening alongside Tendulkar any day of the week in my ATG XI.

Yeah criticisms of Gilchrist based on his average are miles off. It was his job to go hard from ball 1. It's not as if he couldn't build an innings or salvage one, was picked on the strength of doing exactly that down the order for WA and was picked in the middle order for Australia on that basis. Once Tubs retired, his role changed.

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
Averages aboved 60 when chasing and 40 when batting first. Crazy numbers.

I loved how super fast his loops when he shots are when he is super focussed. It is like lightning.
