Where does Virat Kohli rank amongst the ATG ODI batsmen?

Deanoooooooo! Gilchrist had quite a downturn tbh, even if he was spectacular from time to time.
Gilchrist and Jayasuriya are pretty unique. Their averages don't look spectacular, but their role was basically to go out there and smash the new ball around and give the innings that kick-start it needs towards a big total. Them being hit and miss comes by design. That's why it makes sense to have one of them paired with a more conservative run machine like Tendulkar or Mark Waugh.

I'd have Kohli in the top 15 or so easily already. He's done some amazing things and his chasing ability is absolutely unreal. Not many like him in history.

Not looked but must have one of the best ratios ever for hundreds per game too. Gives him a bit more in the bank.

The gold figure for Ganguly for me is his average of 41 in over 300 matches. Ganguly played from 1996-2004 mostly with a few matches after that. 1996-2004 or so, if you managed to average over 40 in ODIs, it was pretty special. Many of his contemporaries didn't. Anwar finished with 39, Inzamam with 39.5, M Waugh with 39.35, Gilly with 35.9 to name just a few.

All of those players are more of an asset than Kohli.

Especially Bevan. Who incidentally was a much better player of the short ball than is Sangakarra.
Really? From what I remember, wasn't his Test career cut short because he couldn't play the short ball too well?

Nah, his Test career wasn't cut short. He was dropped the first time because, basically, he flinched at a regulation not-very-short ball from Gough. It looked bad and Greg Blewett was knocking hard on the door so he was turfed. Might have looked harsh but Blewwy smashing the bejeesus out of England in Adelaide then Perth made it look like a genius move, especially since bowling short to Blewwy was a recipe for a metric ****-ton of leather chasing for anyone who tried it. The next time he was picked, though, he was given a decent run although his role as a batting all-rounder might have messed with him a bit.

It wasn't Bevan's play against the short ones that did him in, it was the big fat edges he presented to every slips cordon in existence at the time. By the time he'd solved that and dominated Shield cricket for a season or two, was too late. Could always play the bumpers fine, though.

You play against him when he was here at the Academy? Apparently he used to bowl absolute rockets.

Agree mostly, but Bevan himself has admitted to having a mental block against innoccuous short pitched stuff, so there definitely was a problem. Have heard interviews where he said he felt like he almost had too much time to play them.

Is it true that he resolved the short pitched issue later and had terrific performances in domestic cricket?

Even if it is a myth that he sucked vs the short ball, Sanga ****s on him in every way re test batting including playing short bowling. Don't ever reply to sledger.

At the last world cup I remember trying to argue with people here that he should be in the India side ahead of Yusuf Pathan.

Yusuf ****ing Pathan.
I argued for Raina in place of Pathan, got some flak because Pathan had played some good knocks in preceding South Africa tour. Raina did ultimately replace him and made 2 critical contributions in quarters and semi.
