Glenn Maxwell's Test Career

Should Maxwell Be Given Another Shot In Test Cricket

Should Glenn Maxwell be given another chance in test cricket or should the Aussie selectors try out a different guy?
Playing reverse sweep shots coming into a game where australia is trying to survive and yet not caring about his wicket but about his runs in selfish, but is it bad enough for him to be overlooked for a long time?
I reckon he needs to wait a few years until he is ready for test cricket.
What do you think...

I find it hard to believe there are not a multitude of candidates more deserving of a place in Australia's Test team than Glenn Maxwell.

Shouldn't be in the team for the first test. No reason why he shouldn't be given another chance in the future if he earns it.

Tangles

International Vice-Captain
Wait. Did I miss him earning the 1st 2 chances he got? I'd stamp his papers Not A Test Player till he proves otherwise in FC cricket.

Its not as if he has a bad FC record. Average? Maybe but he's only played 29 first class games. Is going to be a legend in all formats.

Riggins

Yeah he had a pretty good finish to the shield year too. Not as if he smashed the door down, obviously, but he didn't do zero.

Tangles

International Vice-Captain
He's not a 3 or a front line spinner which is the 2 roles he has been given so far. So he's unproven in those roles.

I'm surprised to see he averages 40 in FC.

When you watch him play he can obviously bat but he's a bit daft. Not what you want in a number three but he could bat six if the space was open and if he sorted his brain out maybe he could go higher.

Yeah sort of the angle I'm coming from. But I think he needs to do a lot of first class batting six and then in a few years when Smith has to move up the order due to someone retiring or whatever (and being captain possible) then the position may be open for him if he proves himself in first class. Has potential though you need a good eye to be able to reverse sweep like he does.

I'm not sure why Maxwell is wearing all this, when it should be the selectors in the gun.

Maxwell is a short form specialist, Blind Freddy knows that. The selectors pitched him in at #3, a spot I'm not aware he inhabits for Victoria, or perhaps even Fitzroy Doncaster. You're basically throwing a Hail Mary, hoping his hitting ability throws you up a blitzkrieg 80 at least when the odds are sky-high of him doing so. He doesn't play the sort of innings you're after even when he does score tons for Victoria, so why is he going to score them in foreign conditions in a foreign batting slot in his third Test?

And if they want to factor in his bowling, they've gone and doubled up on right-arm off-spinners without any major variation, dropping a left-arm spinner who made a debut - took wickets albeit bowling not all that well - then was canned as they've done with the last 2 dozen post-Warne tweakers.

Add to that the fact he was brought in for a guy who scored a ton in the warm-up match before the 1st Test, who the captain wanted in the side.

So yeah, I wouldn't be predominantly blaming the guy who just played the way he does every time he does out to bat. And that's from a pretty anti-Maxwell campaigner in myself

Exactly what i've been saying, who cares if he plays the most godawful shot the world has ever seen when the team requires something other than a wild swing across the line and an epic reverse sweep.

It's just his nature I suppose, I mean it's not like he can change it or anything. Warner tried it and look how miserably his test career has failed.

Warner hasn't changed his game...that's kinda the point. He's batted this same way opening in FC cricket, did well, got a Test gig.

Maxwell batted this way in FC games at 6 and hasn't had enough success to warrant selection in that spot, let alone at number 3.

Didn't he make his runs for Vic at 3 towards the end of last year? I can't remember.
He's only played one innings there, and didn't do much. As Vic says, most of his runs came last year when Victoria were already ****ed and he sorta had the freedom to do whatever he wanted, which makes it a tad difficult to judge

I think maxwell has, similar to Smith in the 10/11 Ashes, sorta been left to be the prime scapegoat figure for both the India 2013 and UAE 2014 tours, which is a bit rough on him.
