***Official*** Indian Domestic Season 2014/15

Pratters

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
I saw Pankaj Singh in a recent Duleep Trophy game. Bowled quite well. Speed was on the lower side though - 130-135. Ganguly was saying the commentary today that had the catch been held in England and another wicket had gone his way, it would have been a different story for Pankaj. He has been snubbed right now as most of our tournaments next 4 months are down under and at his pace, with little variation, he wouldn't do that well. I wish some one tells him though that he is in their future plans for after 4 months. Else he may just go astray and we may lose him for good.

Pankaj Singh hasn't been handled well at all. Yes, he's slow, but so are most pace bowlers picked for India- Mohit Sharma being a prominent example and Dhawal Kulkarni, not very different- and India's top pick, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, bowling at even less, with poor strike rates. If they wanted pace, they could stick to Umesh, Aaron and Shami- but all of them lack control that Pankaj has, and lack even the fitness to last a full tour. The BCCI's clueless player management system is definitely guilty.

They could have stuck to raw pace of Umesh and Aaron, or success in domestic and reserves/futures cricket with Pankaj and Pandey, but they've done neither.

Meanwhile, here are the best OD bowlers India have had lately- Vinay Kumar (181 wickets in 109 matches, striking at 30), Anureet Singh (strike rate under 30), Sid Kaul (strike rate a little over 30), Rahul Shukla (pace suspicion notwithstanding, strike rate a shade over 30)- but how many will last a single ODI series? Makes you think, doesn't it?

Yeah, the England tests unfortunately seem to be the end of Pankaj's career. Ishant and Bhuvi won't be dropped for a while. The rest of the spots are between Shami, Aaron, Yadav. Even in ODIs he's not getting a go, which doesn't bode well.

Manish Pandey is having a great Hazare Trophy, as also Pujara. Good sign for Test prospects, and they should be playing ODIs as well in place of some ODI specialist weaknesses in the current side. In the bowling charts, Pankaj Singh still leads, but won't hold the lead for long because his team's been eliminated.

We're now aware of how the top 10 draw works out, because the top two of each zone eventually proceed into this draw. I'm not satisfied with this format, as it doesn't encourage attacking, positive cricket. You should have the knockout stage made of the top ten (or eight) teams overall, so that the number three team in one zone that has played much better cricket moves ahead of the simply average number two team of a zone full of pushovers. Himachal may miss out despite having played better than Odisha, although they had one more game in hand.

Ideally, you'd want it the other way round, with Umesh, Pankaj and Shami being the frontline bowlers. Ishant isn't adding much to his place, in Tests or ODIs, while Bucky isn't getting wickets when the conditions don't seam and swing enough to threaten Indian batsmen. These two should be dropped for a while, and the rest, persisted with. I feel the reasons for Pankaj's repeated exclusion have a lot less to do with cricket than with the BCCI's rivalry with RCA.

I cannot take you seriously when you say Bhuvneshwar should be dropped. Yeah, he may well be useless when it doesn't swing, but how idiotic would it be if he was dropped after one of the best all round series an Indian has ever had?

Veer Pratap Singh has good height, and is very accurate, and decently fast. If he can increase his pace to something serious, he's a prospect for India after 50 ODIs. Looking good so far.

I missed the part where Manoj Tiwary smashed the North bowlers around.

Look at the number of wickets he's taken. Over the last two years. Is this what you call a specialist bowler? I say drop him, for someone who can actually take wickets. Like Shami. If a bowler can't get wickets, he's useless.

If Bucky can get runs, nothing like it, but as a specialist bowler, he's finished.

Poor batting from North Zone. They're letting a raw bowler like VP Singh and the erratic Ashok Dinda get away with nothing remarkable.

Also Unmukt Chand seems to get selected for every representative side but when's the last time he scored runs?

Veer Pratap gets a wicket off one of his worst deliveries, with a great catch by Sourashish Lahiri. That man is old, but he's taken a great catch at third-man. Why do we have to leave out players from the Indian team on age?

Not sure. He seems to get picked only because he's young, and he's been a top scorer in the U-19 World Cup that India won. And this was the bloke Ian Chappell wanted rushed into the national team.

Experience showing. Mandeep and Yuvraj hitting three fours off Dinda.

EDIT: Disappointing. Yuvraj plays a lazy stroke and edges Samantray to keeper.

Yuvraj looks resigned to the fact that he will never wear the Indian colors again. Definitely an ATG Indian great in ODIs.

He has played a sum total of a staggering 5 ODIs tbh.

He has 3403 List A runs at an average of 54.01, and the World Cup is in Australia and New Zealand. I don't see how he can be omitted from the list of 30 probables.

The last time Yuvraj played an International match in any format was 1 year back right? What has he done since then in domestic scene to merit selection?

Disclaimer: I don't follow T20 in general, so I might be wrong.

He hasn't even played much active cricket. His form in ODs was also very patchy.
