even though players like ranatunga and sangakkara were far better and more valuable to their side than either of the 2 mentioned above?

Sangakkara will almost certainly be up there at the end of his career - though I'd reckon Aravinda too would average in the 50s had he started his career when Sangakkara did. He'd probably have done so anyway if he'd had more application.
As for Ranatunga, yes, he was one of the most influential figures in Sri Lanka's short history - but more for captaincy than batting or bowling, and I think captaincy is a secondary consideration myself.
