N.D v Canterbury

southern man

U19 Cricketer
Taylor scores quicker and has more strokes than Papps, he can also hit the ball alot harder.

Name another no 5 ot 6 batsman who is in better form than Jeff is?

He was bowling his in=swingers and was hard to get away.

Have you seen Papps play? He demolished the pace bowlers yesterday in fine style but struggled against the spinners.

Taylor is a middle-order player, and Papps is an opener. Contrasting. I think you have forgotten that Papps also scored a run-a-ball 130 this season in the SS and scored it quicker than Taylor.

We aren't short of middle-order batsmen now, we are in the top order though. WHo would you replace Taylor with then?

There is no doubt WIlson is in marvellous form, but needs to bowl to get into the side. Wilson and Turner will know that. He won't get into the Black Caps as a batsman.

Why is it that in NZ we're obsessed with turning good middle order batsmen into average opening batsmen.

Taylor & Fulton bat #3, end of story.

The good sign this season is that the 3 batsmen who have scored runs consistently either bat 1 or 3. Perhaps the 2 most troublesome spots for batting in the NZ team over a number of years.

If Wilson manages to finish the season bowling without another injury, the odds of him making the England tour would be pretty good I would imagine.

Someone was saying to me today that Papps looks almost identical to Chris Nevin and that he'll be no good either.

BUT, thats bollocks if you ask me. Papps is a specialist opener for Canterbury in both forms of the game whereas Nevin is all over the show for Wellington.
Some of the shots Papps played yesterday were magnificent...that over off Joey Yovich was especially good...every bad ball got put away in style.

If Wilson was in form right now, i'd pick him over Tama Canning or Matthew Walker...Wilson has the magic touch & even when things aren't going right for him he'll pull out the miracle ball or hit a 6. He's probably the most gifted sports player i've ever seen.

I think you'll find that Harris has actually played quite well this season...he could have easily lost all interest after being dropped from the Black Caps, but he's stepped up for Canterbury with both bat & ball this season.

I think it'll be a mission for him to get back into the NZ team, but if he keeps plugging away he might get into the team if there's an injury problem.

The North vs South match should be a ripper with plenty of talent in both teams.

Here's my 2 cents worth....

North Island
1 Jesse Ryder
2 James Marshall or Jamie How
3 Hamish Marshall
4 Scott Styris
5 Lou Vincent +
6 Jacob Oram
7 Matthew Walker or James Franklin or Andre Adams or Tama Canning
8 Daniel Vettori
9 Kyle Mills
10 Daryl Tuffey
11 Ian Butler

South Island
1 Michael Papps
2 Craig Cumming
3 Nathan Astle
4 Stephen Fleming
5 Craig McMillan
6 Chris Cairns
7 Brendom McCullum +
8 Jeff Wilson
9 Paul Wiseman
10 Shane Bond or Brad Scott
11 Chris Martin

WIll be a good agme thats for sure!

I agree that the squads look pretty entertaining, but I thought they were going to use this match as a trial for ODI spots.......

in which case IMO it is a waste of time to be playing the established ODI players unless they are struggling for form or coming back thru injury.........of the current squad from the recent ODI series I'd only select the likes of Cumming, Cairns, Adams & Butler - I'd give the rest a break! Then you can add in the likes of Astle & Bond coming back from injury, and make the rest up with 'potentials' & 'contenders' including former Internationals who are still in contention such as Harris & Vincent...........

My Squads would be something like this (bearing in mind that I only have stats to go off so I don't know how these guys play etc):

Nth
McIntosh
How
N Parlane
Nichol
Vincent
Nevin
Franklin
Canning
M Walker
B Martin
Butler
Ryder
Taylor
Schwass
Mason
Adams

Sth
Papps
Stewart
Cumming
Fulton
Gaffaney
Astle
Cairns
Harris
Wilson
McSkimming
C Martin
Scott
Bond
N McCullum
Broom
Walmsley

I'd also make it a 3 match series to enable the squads to be used, and afterwards have a 1 off match and involve the Internationals.......as the 'Possibles' v 'Probables' & mix the teams rather than NZ V NZ 'A'.........& I'd use this format as the annual ODI trial series

:)

Im not sure what the rules are, but it'll be interesting to see if they interchange players...like stack the teams with mostly batsmen & all-rounders when batting & then when fielding play mostly bowlers & all-rounders or something.

I presume though, that it'll just been 11 v 11 for the whole match...I don't think they'll pick McIntosh for the One day match either...he only plays for Auckland in OD's if someone is injured.

Actually I was impressed by both Chris & Bruce Martin last night.

Chris looks like he's got a bit of pace back, and was swinging the ball nicely.
Bruce started a little short but then bowled a brilliant tight spell of spin bowling, he could be really useful in ODI's especially if he develops his batting the way he is.

Don't forget though Anzac that some C.D players come from the Nelson, Blenheim region.

Andrew Schwass plays for Marlborough, so he's qualified for the South Island...Richard Sherlock is also from Nelson, he could be a surprise inclusion much like Ryder was last year.

I don't think i'd have Neal Parlane there either, i'd say they'd go for Richard Jones instead.

I don' think NZ honours are the only thing at stake in this Origin match....a few players will probably realise that NZ 'A' is their next best option. So hopefully competition will be fierce in this match.

I hope they don't as it becomes a mockery of a Trial game - that's why I want to see a 3 game series....

Yeah I'd sort of overlooked that as I wasn't sure who else to go with to partner How - I don't think J Marshall has shown anything this season to warrant a spot, and Howell / Horne are probably beyond selection, Spearman would be a waste & I'm loathe to open with Nevin or Vincent......but your right so I'd go with Nevin

Tim

I think they'll go with James Marshall, I know I sound like a broken record...but if Hamish can average 23 in OD matches and then average 50 with 1 hundred & 4 fifties, then odds on the selectors will believe his twin brother can do the same.

No doubt Nevin will be in the mix, but it's time to give someone else a chance im afraid.

yeah of course they do.........:duh: having one of my blond moments again...........

I'd left Sherlock out because I think he needs another season of regular FC cricket & he hadn't been playing for CD recently......

Jones could replace McIntosh..............

to tell the truth I've had the same thoughts & I thought James would have got the call up to the higher level b4 Hamish esp after their performance in the final last year.......

I know that being twins means nothing so far as style & abilities go, but from what I've heard they are pretty much the same in ability, style & temperament..........If the theory holds true, then I actually think they are even better prospects for the longer game in the Martyn type role / style.......

So far as Nevin goes I totally agree, it's just that he's really the only choice for 'keeper in Limited Overs for the Nth.........

In the 1998 (?) U19 World Cup, James Marshall played for NZ but his brother Hamish didn't.

James was a prolific run-scorer at U19 level and I think he scored quite a few runs at the World Cup too.
Interesting that other players in that team were Papps, Mills & James Franklin.

yeah it's the first real chance for the emerging players to state their case infront of the new Coach.........

I'd be hoping they will use it as a proper trial and rest the established ODI players as I said earlier, then I'd be thinking 'A' series v SRL - longshot for a squad spot v RSA & aiming for the tour to England............

what is the format for the 'A' series - how many games & are they all Limited Overs???? I know it's already been posted somewhere ..........
