Ross Taylor scored 132* today, he's going to be really good in a few years.

People are talking up Jesse Ryder (19ys) as the next big thing in NZ Cricket, but Ross Taylor (19ys) has had even more in the One Day form of the game. Big talent. Big hitter too.

Nothern are getting thrashed at the moment...im afraid despite playing a deeper batting lineup, they're still way below the class of Canterbury's.

The pitch is amazingly seaming and turning, and the ball is swinging heaps.

Totally different conditions that Canterbury encountered n the first innings.

I think you'll also find that the Canterbury bowlers are bowling ALOT better....Butler was bowling far too short, so was Yovich.

Martin & Wisneski were pitching it further up & it has really swung.

Northern still got the use of a fresh pitch so there would have been some seam movement there early on for them.

But there wasn't.

Butler has to learn to swing the ball and actually pitch it up instead of thinking he's the fastest man in the world. He's not 'that' quick to just beat people for outright pace.

But that's the point, Northern didn't pitch it up so there wasn't any swing.

OK if you think any of the Northern bowlers didn't pitch it up, watch the replay or highlights or something. Aldridge didn't drop many if any short at all.

Man has Ross Taylor got a brilliant start to his OD career.

6 matches, 2 not outs, 315 runs, average 78.75, strike rate 108.45, 1 x 100, 2 x 50's.

The leading run-scorers for the State Shield are:

Michael Papps 366 runs at 73.20 (1x100, 2x50s)
Ross Taylor 304 runs at 145.33 (1x100, 2x50s)
Shannon Stewart 279 runs at 46.50 (1x100, 1x50)
Peter Fulton 265 runs at 66.25 (3x50s)
Jeff Wilson 260 runs at 52.00 (2x50s)

Bloody incredible are the Top 1 going.

If Cairns gets injured and Wilson can Bowl then Wilson would have to come in for Cairns, Wilson has been quite brillant this season for Otago and IMO he should be moved up the order yo give him more time at the crease.

Taylor is a far better player than Papps.

Well, he had played the Pakistanis 10 times and only got average scores in 2 games. That's not good enough.

Name another batsman who can bowl and is in the same form as Jeff, Im talking a middle order batsman.
He's only bowled in one SS game and only a few SC games. That's hardly enough to warrant selection.

If he was to play forthe Black Caps, he would bat below Oram and McCullum. You guys are playing him at 5 because you don't have any decent middle-order batsmen.

Oh really, based on one innings you have seen him play aye?

Canterbury move clear

Wisden Cricinfo staff

January 21, 2004

Canterbury 254 beat Northern Districts 181 by 73 runs
Scorecard

Canterbury took advantage of a washout in Wellington, to move four points clear at the top of the State Shield table. After Chris Harris had won the toss for Canterbury, Michael Papps and Peter Fulton continued their remarkable run of form with a brace of 72s. They added 119 for the second wicket, but the rest of the batsmen were unable to match their standards, and Canterbury were all out in the last over for 254.

Papps is now the most prolific run-scorer this season with 366 to date, while Fulton has scored 265. They took a particular liking to Ian Butler, who was walloped for 69 in 10 overs, but Graeme Aldridge took 4 for 33 and Joseph Yovich 3 for 52, to battle back in contention.

But Northern Districts' season of woe continued when they slumped to 97 for 7, and it was only a last-wicket stand of 62 between Aldridge and Butler that enabled to save face. It beat their previous tenth-wicket record of 43, between Roydon Hayes and Richard de Groen against Canterbury in 1995-96.

Butler hit out superbly to score 40 not out off 34 balls. However, Canterbury continue to rumble through the competition, thanks in particular to their restrictive bowling. Harris showed the way with 3 for 18 from his 10 overs while Warren Wisneski opened up with 1 for 14 off six.
Interestingly interesting..
