South African Domestic Season 2014/15

Reeza Hendricks just isn't in consistent form in the longer version to definitely nail down the test opening spot. Has the ability and stylish but needs to do more. The Cobras have obviously moved van Zyl to open on CSA's orders (even moved opener Puttick to 4) but he hasn't really done much. He is a 3 or 4.

I know youngster Gihahn Cloete is doing alright and got a hundred v England Lions but he still needs to do far more.

There certainly is a real chance that Stephen Cook could get the gig for Bangladesh after his 4th hundred in 4 games & always been consistent. Can only think of Dave/Dudley Nourse and Peter/Shaun Pollock as previous father/son test players for SA if Cooks gets the call up ? There may be less obvious ones.

EDIT : 3 others for SA

South Africa has announced their contracted players list, not too many surprises. I would have liked to see David Wiese perhaps get a high-performance contract. The high-performance contracts also give some insight into what the selectors' future plans are.

Two-year central contracts: Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn

One-year central contracts: Kyle Abbott, Quinton de Kock, Dean Elgar, Imran Tahir, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Lonwabo Tsotsobe

High Performance contracts: Temba Bavuma, Farhaan Behardien, Simon Harmer, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Eddie Leie, Mangaliso Mosehle, Dane Piedt, Rilee Rossouw, Mthokozisi Shezi, Stiaan van Zyl, Khaya Zondo

Kagiso Rabada handed CSA contract | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

Agree Marius. But I think a lot of the HP contracts is a bit of window dressing to an extent. McLaren & Tsotsobe lucky to hold on to CSA contracts ? Parnell surely doesn't count as a talent anymore ? Phangiso as 2nd choice ODI spinner getting one ?

Suppose the following players can feel they have a Protea future playing regular franchise cricket & didn't get a contract?

Stephen Cook
Gihahn Cloete
Theunis de Bruyn
Cody Chetty
Vaughn van Jaarsveld
Rudi Second/Dane Vilas
David Wiese
Calvin Savage
Andile Phehlukwayo
Chris Morris
Tabraiz Shamsi
Keshav Maharaj
Hardus Viljoen
Marchant de Lange
Daryn Dupavillon
Matthew Pillans (new quick supposedly bowling over 140kmph off 10-for for the Dolphins. Haven't seen him so can't judge)

Gone Kolpak or overseas & not retired

Richard Levi
Colin Ingram
Rory Kleinveldt

Players probably past it for SA but still do well domestically

Andrew Puttick
Justin Ontong
Albie Morkel
Morne van Wyk

COBRAS vs DOLPHINS at Newlands starting tomorrow

The Sunfoil Dolphins have retained the same squad to do battle against the Nashua Cape Cobras at Sahara Park Newlands in their Sunfoil Series later this week that came within a whisker of victory over the Chevrolet Knights at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead clash last week.

Graham Hume pulled up with a hamstring niggle at training the day before the Knights clash however both he and his injury replacement, Calvin Savage, have been included for the Cape Town trip while young seamer Tshepo Moreki is the only addition to the squad.

With injury still plaguing Ryan McLaren, Robbie Frylinck and Craig Alexander, Hume’s KZN Inland partner Matthew Pillans took the opportunity he was given against the Knights and filled his boots as he clinched his maiden first class ten wicket match haul.

Morné van Wyk will be hoping for more of the same from Pillans at Newlands while the skipper will be hoping both he and his younger brother Divan will be able to continue their recent run of form with the bat after both notched up centuries against the Knights.

The Sunfoil Dolphins take on the Nashua Cape Cobras at Sahara Park Newlands from Thursday 5-Sunday 8 March.

SUNFOIL DOLPHINS SQUAD:
Divan van Wyk, Imraan Khan, Khayelihle Zondo, Cody Chetty, Daryn Smit, Morné van Wyk, Andile Phehlukwayo, Calvin Savage, Keshav Maharaj, Daryn Dupavillon, Graham Hume, Matthew Pillans and Tshepo Moreki
Cobras’ lack of patience in the foundational phase of 4-day games still a concern for new skipper

The Nashua Cape Cobras have made an encouraging improvement in their emphatic 170-run win against The Unlimited Titans at Boland Park in Paarl the weekend, but a more patient build-up in the foundational phase of Sunfoil Series matches are needed in the rest of their domestic four-day campaign, said Dane Vilas, new skipper of the Cobras.

Vilas will replace Justin Ontong as skipper. Ontong’s wife, Lee-Anne, gave birth on Monday, and he is not available for the match against the Sunfoil Dolphins at the Newlands cricket ground starting on Thursday.

Vilas said if there is an area in which the Cobras can show improvement, it is their tendency to strive for too much too early. They lose patience with bat and ball.

“We attempt to bat at a tempo of 3.5 runs per over instead of setting up the game. We need to lay the foundation first, and attack from there. We need aggressive defence.
“With the ball, we might attempt a glory ball, instead of striving for consistency,” he added.

Vilas said the first-innings total are still not sufficient enough, as the champions won the four-day domestic showpiece the past two seasons have been dismissed on too many occasions for 250, instead of setting up substantial totals of 350 to 400.

The new skipper wants the Cobras to address these problem areas in the four-day match against the Sunfoil Dolphins starting at the Newlands cricket ground on Thursday.

Pieter Malan, who has scored four first-class centuries in the 2014/2015-season, will replace Ontong in a straight swop.
The experienced all-rounder Robin Peterson and Justin Kemp have started training with the team, but have not had substantial enough bowling practice to make themselves available for Sunfoil Series action.

As a middle-order batsman, Vilas has slammed 436 at an average of 54.50.
Probed about his success, Vilas said he has spoken at length with successful senior batsmen like Stiaan van Zyl and Ontong, and have learned from their more patient approach to building totals.
He hopes to continue his prolific form into the match against the Dolphins.

The visitors have at least two new-age fast bowlers who can challenge the top-order of the hosts. Mathew Pillans is fresh from a 10-wicket haul against the Chevrolet Knights, while Daryn Dupavillon is a former South African u.19-bowler whose ability with reverse swing has been a standout-factor for the Durban franchise.

The Cobras squad for the match against the Dolphins is: Dane Vilas (capt), Stiaan van Zyl, Richard Levi, Omphile Ramela, Andrew Puttick, Pieter Malan, SA Engelbrecht, Dane Piedt, Rory Kleinveldt, Mthokozisi Shezi, Beuran Hendricks, Dane Paterson, Lizaad Williams.

Cobras having their first tough 4-day season in many a year.

Maharaj is a left-arm spinner & did that on day 1 ! He has a good action but probably bowled a bit too flat. Needs to back up good performances with more good performances.

Right-arm off-spin : Harmer - Piedt - Coetsee - Subrayen
Right-arm leg-spin : Tahir - Leie - von Berg - Smit
Slow left-arm : Robbie P - Phangiso - Maharaj - Linde
Slow left-arm chinaman : Shamsi

Good to see Rabada top the wicket takers' list. What are the odds of him making a Test debut this year?

Saw some people on Twitter saying that he should be at World Cup, ha ha - because 9 wickets in an FC innings in SA means you'll run through ODI side likes Australia and India. Still not sold on his LO credentials to be honest, may be one of those guys who is far better in the longer stuff - the opposite of Tsotsobe perhaps.

4-day Sunfoil Series showdown at Kingsmead between the Lions and the Dolphins.

Savage slowly getting back to his potential after the last game & with Dupavillon & Pillans as strike-bowlers they have been bowling sides out + the leading spinner in the competition Keshav Maharaj. But interesting to see they have left out Maharaj for this game. Talking about strike-bowlers, good to see the other youngster Craig Kirsten (part of the young triumvirate with Savage & Dupavillon) in the squad after serious injuries like Savage has had.

The shoot-out for the test opening spot continues with Stiaan van Zyl, Reeza Hendricks, Gihahn Cloete & Stephen Cook.

For the Cobras, their worst 4-day season in recent memory. Piedt being left out now as taking time to recover from serious shoulder injury. Beuran Hendricks back in their line-up though but he suffered since his injury too.

Probably take Harmer & Tahir as the spinner for our next 2 test series. Maharaj pushing but Piedt they will have to patient with. Leie hasn't done enough. Robbie P playing ahead of Piedt but I just can't see them going back.

I see van Zyl has had to retire hurt on 24 after a Marchant de Lange over.
"The extent of Van Zyl's injury is unknown, but if the degree of damage is not deemed to be too serious, he will be able to take his place on the park at a later stage."
Not sure what this bit from Supersport actually says.

Looks like a first 4-day title for the Lions in 15 years. Long serving players like Cook, Petersen & McKenzie finally getting their hands on that trophy. They have deserved it, solid batting & a bowling line-up that is at you with Rabada, Morris, Viljoen at 140kph +, Pretorius as young all-rounder starting to get backed and all action leggie Leie.

For the Dolphins, good to see them back their young quicks and seamers like Phehlukwayo, Savage, Pillans, Dupavillon & who knows Kirsten may get a debut now if fit in the last game. A big developing season for Maharaj though. Always been a contest between Subrayen (with his action issues) & him and neither really wanted the role enough but Keshav has taken a few steps forwards now. Their batting can blow hot and cold but they building something if they back their young attack.

Stephen Cook with his 5th hundred of the season. Has to be picked but they will probably go Stiaan so that Bavuma is reserve batsman. Still believe Stiaan and Rilee are ahead of Bavuma for 3-6 role & I wouldn't try and force Stiaan to be an opener.

Dean Elgar with a double today after a hundred last round getting into a bit of runs. We need that opening partner for him.

Not sure when the 'A' series is around but you would imagine Stephen Cook, Stiaan van Zyl, Reeza Hendricks, Theunis de Bruyn, Temba Bavuma & Rilee Rossouw should be the batting stocks for the 4-day stuff.

Early transfer news a few weeks ago is that Yaseen Vallie & young keeper Clyde Fortuin are leaving the Cobras for the Warriors for next season.

Interesting news that Chris Morris may be going to his home franchise the Titans where his old man tweaked away left-arm orthodox for many years. Now that could be interesting with Albie Morkel and David Wiese there as all-rounders already.

What I find interesting is quite a few Pretoria Boys High School Old Boys didn't stay at the franchise with Simon Harmer & Mathew Pillans also never being involved with their home franchise. Not sure if they will keep another one in Aiden Markram.
