Left Courtney out due to being similar to Ambrose and the nice look of that swing/brute/control pace attack.

Never attempted one of these (so go easy on me!!) Sadly my knowledge of players pre my watching days (mid 80's) is rather limited, but going by rankings this shouldn't be so hard......

23/07/1971

1: Boycott (3)
2: Gavaskar (7)
3: Edrich (8)
4: Rohan Kanhai (5)
5: KD Walters (2)
6: Garry Sobers (1 on batting, 7 for bowling)
7: Knott† (21)
8: Bruce Taylor (11)
9: John Snow (2)
10: Derek Underwood (1)
11: Bishen Bedi (3)

Bit of a shortage of good quicks in 1971 eh........all spinners in the top 10 apart from Snow. So hopefully this team isn't playing in Perth or on a Headingly green top.

So how did I go.......did I win??? Should at least get a prize for being one of the oldest ****s here........think only Fred topped me there.

Excellent! I had no idea it was so easy to call up the rankings from yesteryear. I was born in the middle of the '62/63 Ashes:

Hanif Mohammad - 9
Bob Simpson - 12
Colin Cowdrey - 5
Ken Barrington - 4
Ted Dexter (c) - 2
Gary Sobers - 1/9
John Waite (w) - 25
Alan Davidson - 32/1
Richie Benaud - 36/5
Wes Hall - 2
Fred Trueman - 3

Testament to the strength of England's batting in the early sixties, and to the sharp decline of FST - number 3 in the world in 1963, left off the tour to South Africa 18 months later.

Love the bowling attack and the cordon (Simpson, Sobers, Cowdrey, wow), both top notch. Would personally bat Sobers higher, likely at 4 in that line up.

Mohsin Kahn has a couple of ratings points on Greenidge as opener but Greenidge a familiar name. Cheated slightly too by picking Marshall over Dev despite lower points, though gave in to the spirit of the thread by including number one ranked bowler Geoff Lawson over Dev and several other great names. Highest ranked spinner is Iqbal Qasim at 10.
