New Zealand Off Season 2014

That first match could be particularly ugly. Williamson, Taylor and possibly Southee out.

I assume they'll put Latham at 3 and probably give Neesh the series as opener. Unless they go with Brownlie, about whom I'm thoroughly unconvinced.

Hmmm, I hope Milne's absence is just due to the ongoing rehabilitation of his elbow surgery, and not a reoccurence of the same injury that prompted the surgery in the first place. He's meant to be doing some light bowling for Manawatu today, so hopefully he's getting back to fitness. When does the World Cup Squad have to be named by? There's not a lot of time left for him to get fit and stake his claim.

Anyway, it's a bit tough with all the injuries, but I guess my XI for the first ODI would be:

Guptill
Latham
Watling
Brownlie
McCullum
Anderson
Ronchi
Vettori
Mills
Henry
McClenaghan

Yup, 4 wicket keepers in the top 7, more than halfway there.

You need a sixth bowling option, I think. Too dangerous to go into a game against South Africa with no back-up other than specialist batsmen.

Martin Guptill
Tom Latham
BJ Watling
Brendon McCullum
Corey Anderson
Jimmy Neesham
Luke Ronchi+
Daniel Vettori
Kyle Mills
Matt Henry
Mitchell McClenaghan

Urgh, Anderson at 5 and Neesham at 6 is a horrifically short batting lineup, think I'd rather take a risk with 5 bowlers.

I did a stats guru query a while ago on NZ ODI form in NZ over both last 2 years or 3 years.

Can't remember which of these it was but NMac averaged 90 with the ball in ODIs in NZ in that timeframe, while his RPO was respectable.

That reads like a lot of batting power plays being arrived at with well set batsmen.

Edit: here is the query.

As much as a like - for like Watling seems, I highly doubt Hesson will put him in the top order. They want Latham and Neesham to develop in that area.

Yeah but when's the last time Watling batted in the top order? Latham is the reserve top order batsman, Watling is the reserve middle order/keeper.

Neesham will open with Guptill.

Probably not, no, but Hesson is dead keen on a 6th bowler in the top order and he's already said they want to try him opening.

The 'but NMac keeps it tight' line of thinking will be what sees us lose another semi final.
